First drink tax payments due to county
Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Initial payments from Allegheny County's new 10 percent drink tax were due yesterday, and so far, county Treasurer John Weinstein says his office has collected a little more than $1 million in tax revenues from about 700 liquor license holders.

Mr. Weinstein, who reported a 25 to 30 percent error rate in early returns last week, said he will have a better picture of how much revenue the county can expect from the levy this month and how many liquor license holders complied with the law, later this week.

He released guidelines in December for the new drink tax, which was approved with the county's budget last year to help fund the county's $30 million subsidy of the Port Authority.

Mr. Weinstein, who sent drink tax collection forms to 2,200 liquor license holders, said he plans to go after non-compliant restaurateurs and bar owners in the next few weeks.

According to the law, they are required to collect the tax on all sales of alcoholic beverages, including six-pack sales, mixed drinks, wine and beer (opened or unopened).

Non-compliant business owners stand to be fined $300 for the first violation and an additional $300 or imprisonment of not more than 90 days for repeated violations.
