Carnegie man guilty of killing roommate
Monday, February 25, 2008

A jury convicted a Carnegie man today of fatally stabbing his roommate and then beheading, dismembering and eviscerating him and concealing the body in a shallow grave.

James Baldwin Jr., 24, presented evidence at trial that he was mentally ill when he attacked Brendon Glen-David Martin, 19, on Jan. 25, 2006. He showed no emotion when the jury foreman announced the panel of seven men and five women had found him guilty of first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse, meaning they'd ruled against his insanity defense.

The victim's parents said the family has been torn apart by the tragedy. His father, Craig Martin, explained he had attempted suicide five times since Brendon died, and had been assigned a service dog to monitor his mood swings. The victim's mother, Sarah Memel, has suffered a heart attack and other health ailments which she said were related to the trauma. The victim's grandfather also quickly succumbed to symptoms of Parkinson's disease in the months following the homicide, his parents said.

Ms. Memel, of Lubeck, W.Va., said she felt some relief but said Mr. Baldwin "showed no remorse" and the brutality of the crime was difficult to bear.

Initially, the defendant denied knowing the whereabouts of Mr. Martin after Allegheny County homicide detectives questioned him about the five garbage bags containing body parts, cutting tools, a shovel and household garbage. Police were notified about evidence by a Collier road maintenance worker who discovered suspicious bicycle tracks in the snow and footprints that led to the shallow grave about 50 yards off Ridge Road in an isolated, wooded area. Mr. Martin's remains were positively identified by a tattoo.

The district attorney was not seeking the death penalty, so Mr. Baldwin faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

Sentencing is scheduled before Common Pleas Judge Kathleen Durkin on May 14.
