Western Pennsylvania high schools get 2008 musicals in gear
Sunday, February 24, 2008

The annual onrush of high school spring musicals has just started, establishing a beachhead in late February in promise of sunnier days to come. Here they are, 118 Southwestern Pennsylvania high musicals arranged chronologically by week, and within each week, in order of first performance and then length of run (shorter runs first). Note that some shows also run a second weekend.

Doubtless the list will grow as late arrivals trickle in. Send any additions or corrections to crawson@post-gazette.com, and we will keep the list up to date on the PG High School Musicals Web page (follow the link at post-gazette.com/theater or go to it directly at post-gazette.com/theater/hsmusicals.asp).

You can also find this list in two other alphabetical arrangements, one by school (click here), the other by title of show (click here). The Web is a good place to keep up with the Post-Gazette's extensive high school musicals coverage, which in print is necessarily spread among the different suburban editions.

These 116 schools are doing 118 shows, made up of 55 different titles, which is a few less than last year, because there is more concentration on certain titles. This year's leaders are "Beauty and the Beast" (eight), "Seussical" and "Guys and Dolls" (both seven), "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Fiddler on the Roof" (both five), and "All Shook Up," "Footloose" and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" (all four).

"All Shook Up" is new, a musical written to accommodate Elvis songs; it flopped on Broadway but is now available to high schools, where it should prove popular.

That's one use for these lists: studying the ebb and flow of popular taste, as refracted through the taste of high school musical producers. The other is as a spur to see more musicals in more communities. For specific days and times, contact the schools. Some have free senior citizens previews, the dates of which may not be included here.

On the PG High School Musicals page you will also soon find weekly previews and eventually a half-dozen or more full reviews (some with photo journals) and reviews by student Kelly Critics from Pittsburgh CLO's Gene Kelly Awards.

The Kelly Awards are one of the four regional showcases. Participants in these are marked on the list as follows:

5th North Pittsburgh Musical Showcase (invited): Seneca Valley Intermediate High School, 8 p.m. May 3; 11 schools confirmed as of April 18, marked #.

12th Westmoreland Night of the Stars (Westmoreland County): Palace Theatre, Greensburg, 6:45 p.m. May 7; 15 schools entered, marked +.

14th Henry Mancini Awards (Butler, Lawrence and Beaver counties): Methany Fieldhouse, Geneva College, Beaver Falls, 7 p.m. May 21; 12 schools entered, marked @.
