BRADENTON, Fla. -- Notes, quotes and anecdotes from the Pirates' spring training ...

Day 7: The workout spanned 2 1/2 hours yesterday, under thick clouds but steamy 80-degree temperatures at Pirate City. Eighteen pitchers threw live batting practice, including Paul Maholm, Matt Morris, Zach Duke and John Grabow. The drill focus was on specific game situations, including pickoffs, rundowns and sacrifice bunts.

Off the field, owner Bob Nutting and president Frank Coonelly addressed the players in the morning, watched the workout and, in the evening, participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Pirate City headquarters. The building includes offices, work and play areas and dormitories, and was part of an $18 million renovation of the complex and McKechnie Field that is being funded by Florida state and local governments.

Today: The third of four days of live batting practice begins at 10 a.m.

Camp roster: 65, with 37 pitchers, 6 catchers and 22 position players. Byung-Hyun Kim, the free-agent pitcher who agreed to terms on a one-year contract Wednesday, is expected to sign the contract this morning and join camp right away. He reported to Pirate City yesterday and passed his physical.

Injury updates: Second baseman Freddy Sanchez (shoulder) did some soft throwing during infield drills for the first time. ... Reliever Damaso Marte (flu) did long-tossing and participated in other drills for the first time.

Battle lines: Steve Pearce, a top prospect, split last season between first base and right field, the latter because Adam LaRoche blocks him at first. He has been used exclusively at first so far this spring. "The focus early has been to get him the foundational work at first, including the footwork, as that has been more intense than what he would have been run through in the outfield," director of player development Kyle Stark said. "Our goal is to get him time in the outfield very soon, as that is the more likely scenario for him in the big picture."

Fun in the sun: Among the new drills manager John Russell has introduced is one catcher Ronny Paulino probably wants to ditch. A ball-gun, stationed near home plate, was shooting balls straight up into the air for catchers to practice catching popups. Paulino missed his first try ... and his next... and... when he finally caught the sixth, the dozens of fans watching with amusement broke into applause.

Paulino, being a good sport, turned to the fans and doffed his helmet.

Overheard: "Yes, bay-bee!" Catcher Ryan Doumit mimicked Dick Vitale -- who was making his annual visit to camp after a drive from nearby Sarasota -- when Casey Fossum's string of knee-buckling curveballs finally broke LaRoche's bat.

Countdown to Atlanta: 39 days.
