Ask LaMont: Who gets into fashion shows?
Monday, February 18, 2008
It takes persistence or connections to get close to the runway for fashion shows, like this one from Bravo TV's "Project Runway" designer Christian Siriano in New York during fashion week.
Q: I read your reports on fashion week in New York City. I was wondering how you get into the shows and the chances of an ordinary person like me getting in.

A: I get this question a lot. Although it can be difficult to get invited to a designer's show, it's not impossible. The easiest way to get invited to a show is to know the designer and for the designer to make sure that you get hooked up.

Anyone with an invitation usually has a good chance of gaining access. The process is more complicated for media, stylists, etc. This season, registration cost $65. If approved, you are issued a credential that gets you into the Bryant Park tents, the site of most of the shows. Your information is also sent to the designers, who individually determine whether they will invite you to their specific shows.

Some people decide to not register and to directly contact a designer or the public-relations agency representing the designer. That's harder, but it can yield results. Persistence is essential. You have no idea how many writers and photographers practically beg to get into a show.

You need an invitation to be eligible to enter individual shows. If you are given a seat assignment, you're almost guaranteed admission. There is a standing line for those not given seating assignments, and they are allowed to enter and fill in vacant seats or stand in the rear if there's room.

In short, an invitation helps, but it's not guaranteed to get you in. You can read more about procedures at www.mbfashionweek.com.
