Carnegie Science Center director defends "Bodies" exhibit
Saturday, February 16, 2008

The director of the Carnegie Science Center this morning said she stands by the center's controversial exhibition of human bodies, despite an ABC News report last night that raised questions about how the bodies for such displays are procured in China.

Jo Haas invited reporters to the science center to say she saw nothing in correspondent Brian Ross' 20/20 report that led her to believe the bodies in her exhibit were improperly obtained by the center's supplier.

Ms. Hass said "Bodies... The Exhibition" has been wildly popular, drawing more than 150,000 people since opening in October.

Mr. Ross reported on a "black market" that supplies bodies, including those of executed prisoners, for display in the United States. The network said New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo had subpoenaed information from Atlanta-based Premier Exhibitions, which provided bodies for the science center show and those in other cities.

Ms. Haas lauded the exhibit's educational benefits. She said she's been assured the bodies were those of people who died of natural causes. The bodies were unclaimed by relatives, she said, but legally obtained.
