Municipal and school officials in Bethel Park have come up with at least a temporary remedy to a parking problem near the Benjamin Franklin Elementary School.
Last month, dozens of residents showed up at a council meeting to discuss no-parking signs that were installed on Florida Avenue near the school in December. Some said the signs were a good thing because they kept drivers from blocking driveways and tearing up sidewalks on the school side of the street.
Others argued that being able to park only on the opposite side of the street where there are no sidewalks forced drop-off students to walk in the street to get to the school's crosswalk.
Gena DeIuliis, the PTO president at Ben Franklin, said a compromise was reached at a recent meeting between school and municipal officials.
She said Bethel Park Police Chief John Mackey explained that the no-parking signs do not mean that parents cannot stop there to drop off students in the morning. He also said parents can now park on the street each day from 3:20 to 3:50 p.m. to give them time to get into the school and sign out their children.
Drivers in the morning are being asked not to block driveways, she said.
"We didn't get what we wanted, but we got what we needed," Ms. DeIuliis said. She said parents were mostly concerned with keeping the kids safe.
She said the two sides are working on a more permanent solution that could include additional parking spaces being installed behind the school.
