PG South: Four district wrestlers are seeking to retain their Section 4-AAA titles
Thursday, February 14, 2008

James Fleming, David Doman, Bryson Pritchard and Nebojsa Nedic enter Saturday's Section 4-AAA wrestling tournament at Waynesburg Central High School with the same goal -- to win another section title.

Fleming (21-0), a 145-pound junior from West Mifflin Area, is a two-time section and WPIAL champion who won his prior titles at 135 and 140. Doman (20-4), a 125-pound senior from Upper St. Clair, is a two-time section finalist who won at 119 last year.

Pritchard (21-11), a 119-pound sophomore from Baldwin, claimed the 103-pound title last year in his varsity debut. Nedic (26-3) is a senior from Baldwin who returns to defend his title at 285 pounds.

"David [Doman] is in a very strong weight class this year," said Upper St. Clair coach Emil Deliere. "West Mifflin's Sam Sherlock and Bethel Park's Anthony Bonaccorsi are also entered at 125."

Sherlock (21-1) was the section runner-up at 125 last year. Bonaccorsi (19-6) was a runner-up at 112 in 2006, then finished fourth last year at 125.

Bonaccorsi is one of three Bethel Park entries who have earned runner-up status. The other two are Josh Ricciuti (22-10) and Mike Ganley (28-3), who placed second at 140 and 145 last year. Both return in the same weight class with hopes of climbing one more step to the top of the winners platform.

"Mike Ganley and Adam Lazenga were unbeaten in section matches, so both should be seeded first," said Bethel Park coach Bob Stewart. "We have five others who had only one loss in the section, so they should be seeded among the top two in their weight classes."

Waynesburg's Vincent Camps and Central Catholic's Danny Vaughan are also returning section champs in Section 4-AAA. Camps (20-7) is the defending champ at 135. Vaughan (9-0) returns at 215 after missing most of the season recovering from two football injuries.

McGuffey's Alex Dunaway, Upper St. Clair's Mike McGuire, and Peters Township's Mark Metzmaier were runners-up in the section last year. Dunaway (24-4) returns at 103. McGuire (23-1) has moved to 119 after winning at 112 last year. Metzmaier (20-4) won at 152 and has moved to 160.

"Mike [McGuire] is unbeaten is section matches, so he should be the top seed at 119," Deliere said. "His only loss was to Shady Side Academy's Frank Martellotti, and he's a returning PIAA champion."

CV champs seek repeat

Chartiers Valley has three returning champions in Section 5, which will take place at Trinity High School, but Sean Lubin has not wrestled this season due to complications from a concussion. Lubin won at 103 last season.

Dan Utchel and Eric Kush are returning champions for the Colts, while Matt Wilps is a runner-up. Utchel is a two-time finalist and one-time champion at 215. Kush is the defending heavyweight champion. Wilps returns at 189 after finishing second last year.

Canon-McMillan has four returning champions. The Big Macs are led by three-time section champion Colin Johnston and two-time champions Chris Pihiou and Ron Schram.

Johnston has won titles at 103, 112 and 125, and is now competing at 135. He is also a three-time WPIAL and one-time PIAA champion. Pihiou claimed titles at 112 and 119, then finished second at 135 last year. He is entered at 130 this year. Schram has moved to 125 after winning titles at 103 and 112.

Sam Brownlee won a 275-pound title in 2006 while wrestling at Mt. Lebanon, then sat out last season after transferring to Canon-McMillan. He is ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL at 285.

Mt. Lebanon has three entries who have made a previous appearance in the section finals, including Stan Kochanek (20-7), the defending champion at 119. Chris Johns (11-7) was a runner-up for the Blue Devils at 125 last year. Greg Perri (24-6) was a runner-up at 130 in 2006, but missed last season with an injury. Johns returns at 125, while Perri has moved up to 152.

"Perri and Kochanek are unbeaten in section competition," Mt. Lebanon coach Bill Lewis said, "but both are in strong weight classes."

Out to retain titles

Keystone Oaks' Anthony Zanetta and South Allegheny's Wesley Weston are returning champions in the Section 2-AA tournament, which will take place at Mount Pleasant.

Zanetta (27-0) claimed a 103-pound section title in Class AAA in 2006, then captured his second title last year at 112 in Section 2-AA. He will again compete at 112 this year. Weston (21-2) captured the 140-pound crown. Weston has moved up to 152 this year.

South Park's David Ivashchenko (24-0) is a two-time finalist in Section 1-AA. Ivashchenko won a title at 130 in 2006, then placed second last year at 135. He is competing at 135 again this year.
