Weather again delays schools, morning commute
Wednesday, February 13, 2008

What began as rain in much of southwestern Pennsylvania in the predawn hours changed to snow as temperatures fell across the region as the morning commute began.

The area around Pittsburgh can expect to have about another inch of snow before the precipitation ends later today. There is, however, a winter weather advisory in effect for counties to the east and north, including Blair, Clearfield, Cambria, Somerset and Bedford.

Many schools are operating under a 2-hour delay and there are some closures. See information about school closings and delays on KDKA.com, the Post-Gazette's news partner.

But Pittsburgh Public Schools received complaints from parents this morning because the district didn't call a delay.

District spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said the district's decision to operate on the regular schedule came before 5 a.m., when primary roads were clear. Because snow was expected later in the day, she said, it made sense to get students to their schools.

As it turned out, Ms. Pugh said, the snow came sooner than expected. She said an undetermined number of students had long waits at bus stops because buses couldn't get to them. She said any student who couldn't make it to school because of a busing problem would receive an excused absence.

The district planned dismissal at the usual time today. Activities at the Pittsburgh Gifted Center have been canceled for the day.

With the falling temperatures, travelers should watch for icy spots.
