HARRISBURG -- New open-records legislation is on its way to the governor's desk with the unanimous support of both chambers of the Legislature.
The Senate this morning passed the bill, which is designed to let the public know more about state and local government spending and operations.
The bill calls for the establishment of a state Office of Open Records to assist agencies in determining their obligation to release records. The bill also requires state contracts to be posted online, requires agencies to respond to information requests within five days and stipulates penalties for those that willfully deny access to records that are public under state law.
