Century Club: Long lives the 'queen'

Irene 'Monty' Bohren

As a longtime nurse at West Penn Hospital, Irene "Monty" Bohren was used to hearing her name called. These days, she's the one doing the calling, as the "Queen of Bingo" at Southwestern Assisted Care in West Mifflin.

On Feb. 20, Mrs. Bohren will celebrate her 101st birthday at Southwestern, where she takes part in every outing or party she can. Two years ago, her friends voted her queen of the retirement home.

She was born on Feb. 20, 1907, in New Bedford and grew up in New Castle. She moved to Pittsburgh in 1925 to become a nurse at West Penn Hospital. Eventually, she became head operating-room nurse and, in 1931, married Dr. David W. Morgan. They had two daughters, Suzanne Baur of Gibsonia and Marilyn Stalnaker of Ligonier, and were married for 28 years, until Dr. Morgan's death.

In 1962, she married Karl Bohren, superintendent of the Clairton School District. They had been married 25 years when he died in 1987.

Mrs. Bohren, who has five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, has traveled to Europe, the Caribbean, South America and most of Canada and the United States. She has lived at Arrowwood Southwestern for seven years.

Her secret to longevity? Staying active and avoiding arguments. Who could argue with that?
