WPIAL Girls' Playoffs Roundup: Defending champ New Castle prevails

Defending Class AAAA champion New Castle trailed by nine points going into the fourth quarter of its first-round WPIAL playoff game against Bethel Park last night at North Allegheny, but the Red Hurricane rallied for a 47-41 win.

New Castle (19-5), the No. 4 seed, held Bethel Park (12-12) scoreless over the last 3:31 and outscored the Blackhawks, 18-3, in the final quarter.

Tasia Wise netted a game-high 13 points to lead New Castle. Logan Hartman added 12 points and eight rebounds. Abbey Allen pitched in with 11 points, 5 assists and 5 steals.

Other Class AAAA games

Oakland Catholic 58, Latrobe 47: Oakland Catholic (15-10) outscored Latrobe, 19-8, in the fourth quarter at Penn State Greater Allegheny in one of two other first-round games. Colleen Kiss had 16 points and Blair Cotton 15 for Oakland Catholic, which made 10 3-pointers.

Woodland Hills 52, Uniontown 47: Jamie Smith scored 22 points and Kristin Gates had 11 steals for Woodland Hills (18-7) in its win against Uniontown (14-11) at Hempfield. Nakia DeBlanc added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolverines. Uniontown outrebounded Woodland Hills, 50-32, but turned the ball over 34 times.

Class AAA

Southmoreland 40, McGuffey 28: Jamie Henry had 11 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Southmoreland (18-6) to a win against McGuffey (9-16) at Trinity in one of three preliminary-round games.

West Allegheny 35, Moon 32: West Allegheny (13-11) edged Moon (8-16) at North Hills. Brianna Bayly had 11 points for West Allegheny.

Blackhawk 59, Belle Vernon 37: Krista Franitti had 21 points for Blackhawk (16-9) in its victory against Belle Vernon (6-19) at Chartiers Valley.

Class AA

Sto-Rox 50, Northgate 18: Sto-Rox (15-7) got 16 points from Kerry Connolly in its win against Northgate (9-11) at South Fayette in one of two preliminary-round games.

South Park 67, Beth-Center 26: South Park (17-8) outscored Beth-Center (14-10), 50-12, over the final three quarters at Belle Vernon. Nicole Doria and Laurel Lindsay each made 4 3-pointers for the Eagles.

Class A

Vincentian 72, Avella 34: Lindsay Knapp had 25 points and 10 rebounds as Vincentian (16-8) rolled past Avella (12-11) at West Allegheny in one of five first-round games.

Avonworth 58, Rochester 51: Avonworth (13-9) slipped past Rochester (16-8) at Aliquippa. Tara Gallupe scored 13 of her game-high 27 points from the free-throw line for Avonworth.

Mount Alvernia 62, Clairton 54: Kat Owunna scored 17 of her 21 points in the first half to lead Mount Alvernia (14-8) past Clairton (9-9) at Fox Chapel.

Monessen 67, California 28: No. 1 seed Monessen (24-0) had no trouble with California (8-14) at Charleroi. The Greyhounds, who led, 40-6, at halftime, were led by Christina Chukwuedo's 18 points.

Quigley 59, Mapletown 39: Quigley (18-7) coasted to a win against Mapletown (14-7) at Keystone Oaks. Kayla Taormina led Quigley with 22 points.
