Fishing Report: 2/8/08
Friday, February 08, 2008

Although ice fishing activity continued through the early part of the week, anglers are advised that open water was reported in many places yesterday as a consequence of mild temperatures and recent rainfall. The Butler Fishing Show runs tomorrow and Sunday at Butler High School (www.butlerfishingshow.com) and the Allegheny Sport, Travel and Outdoors Show starts Wednesday at the ExpoMart in Monroeville (www.sportandtravel.com).

Lake Erie: Poor Richard's reports decent steelhead fishing as conditions allow. Creeks were high and muddy yesterday, but the smaller ones were expected to return to normal by today, while the larger ones such as Elk Creek should be fishable by tomorrow. On the lake, Tuesday was the last day of fishable ice. Until the ice melted, Misery Bay was yielding slab crappies, perch, bluegills, largemouth bass and steelhead. Anglers were targeting burbot off the north pier.

Erie County: At East Basin and West Basin ponds, trout stockings are slated for Feb. 15. A trout stocking is slated for Lake Pleasant, a small natural lake, Feb. 19. Upper Gravel Pit Pond was scheduled for a trout stocking this week.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Until mild temperatures and rain eroded ice midweek, bountiful catches of bluegills and crappies were reported, with "the stumps" a particular hot spot.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): Until mild temperatures and rain eroded ice midweek, dandy numbers and sizes of crappies were reported. A trout stocking was performed in the tailrace below the dam Wednesday.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Mercer County): Perch were hitting in the tailrace of the dam Tuesday.

Two Mile Run Reservoir (Venango County): Trout were to have been stocked Tuesday.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Ice anglers were fishing through Tuesday night, although some ice deterioration was reported in recent days. Last weekend, large numbers of largemouth bass in mixed sizes up to 20 inches were iced. Some limits of bluegills and nice numbers of perch also were reported. A 30-inch northern pike was released in the Muddy Creek arm last weekend.

Glade Run Lake (Butler County): A trout stocking is slated for Feb. 19.

Allegheny, Monongahela, Ohio rivers: Flow is high and fast as a consequence of rain. Small saugers were caught at Highland Park last weekend.

North Park Lake (Allegheny County): Trout were stocked Tuesday, and another stocking is slated for Feb. 19.

Brady Run Lake (Beaver County): Trout were stocked Monday.

Lower Hereford Manor Lake, Raccoon Lake (Beaver County): A trout stocking is slated for Feb. 22.

Bessemer Lake (Lawrence County): A trout stocking is slated for Feb. 19.

High Point Lake (Somerset County): Julia Pruszenski, 8, of Brookline released a 24-inch northern pike on a tip-up and shiner fishing with her father, Jeff, in excellent ice-fishing conditions Sunday. It was the largest of several northerns they caught. Ice had deteriorated around the edges as of yesterday.

Youghiogheny River (Fayette County): The tailrace was stocked with trout Tuesday, and a stocking that was postponed Friday because of icy weather, has been rescheduled for today. Anglers have been catching nice numbers of trout near Confluence in recent days.

Laurel Hill Lake (Somerset County): Trout were stocked Tuesday, and a bonus stocking postponed Friday due to icy conditions has been rescheduled for today.

Canonsburg Reservoir (Washington County): A trout stocking was slated for yesterday.

Donegal, Keystone, Lower and Upper Twin lakes and Mammoth Dam (Westmoreland County): Upper Twin Lake is slated for a Feb. 26 stocking. The lower lake is slated for a Feb. 12 stocking.

Spring Creek (Centre County): High and muddy conditions and falling temperatures were reported yesterday, but the stream was expected to be fishable by Sunday or Monday. As conditions allow, anglers have been fishing little grey-winged dark bodied midges and nymph droppers, imitating the cressbugs and sowbugs that abound year-round. The Juniata River also was blown out.

Deep Creek Lake (Maryland): Very good catches of perch were being iced until conditions deteriorated.
