No decision in Gordon situation
Penn Hills school board hears about more than 'withhheld' recruiting letters
Wednesday, February 06, 2008

No final decision was made, but residents packed the Penn Hills Administration Center last night to sound off to the school board on a controversial measure to sign football coach Neil Gordon to a new supplemental contract.

Penn Hills Superintendent Patricia Gennari started the meeting by clarifying that Gordon was not fired, but his one-year supplemental contract expires at the end of the school year.

Most of the crowd came to discuss whether Gordon purposely withheld recruitment letters from student-athletes. A box of unopened letters from prospective colleges was found in Gordon's office last month.

"I hope the school board is wise enough to say we can't give this guy his job back because he violated too much trust from the community," said Louis Rash, who said his son, Joseph, did not receive a recruitment letter that was sent by the University of Maryland. Joseph is now a freshman at the University of Akron.

"Players knew about the box, and it was their responsibility to come down and get [letters]," said Rob Straus, a former volleyball player.

Some accusations against Gordon at the meeting went beyond hiding recruitment letters. Football player Cory Kircher said Gordon kicked him while he had a knee injury and told him to "get his fat [expletive] up." At least four players in the audience raised their hands to say they witnessed the incident.

Gordon did not attend the meeting. School board members will decide whether to rehire him in the next few weeks.
