PG North: Three from area high schools boost Allegheny College team

The Allegheny College men's basketball team is relying heavily on three graduates of PG North area high schools this season.

Sewickley Academy graduate George Raftis, Mars Area graduate Charlie Jaicks and Shaler Area grad Craig Devinney are the top three scorers on the Allegheny College men's baskeball team.

Raftis, a 6-foot-5 sophomore forward, is tied for the team lead with an 11.1 points per game average. He also leads the Gators in rebounding (9.6 per game) and field goal percentage (52.6 percent).

Jaicks, a 6-0 sophomore guard, is also averaging 11.1 points per game. He leads the team with 30 3-pointers and 47 assists.

Devinney, a 6-3 sophomore guard, is averaging 10.2 points per game and leads the team with 30 steals.

NA grad excels

North Allegheny High School graduate Stephanie Wolf ranks second in scoring on the Allegheny College women's basketball team with a 10.2 points per game average.

Wolf, a 5-8 junior guard/forward, also leads the team in field goal percentage (45.6 percent), rebounding (6.1 per game) and assists (4.35).

Hampton's Pogel a surprise

Hampton High School graduate Brian Pogel has started to make a name for himself on the national wrestling scene.

On Jan. 12 at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, Pogel knocked off the 2007 Division II national champion and the nation's No. 1-ranked wrestler Todd Meneely of Nebraska-Omaha. In picking up the win, he rolled to an 11-3 major decision.

Pogel, currently ranked fifth in the nation and first in the East Region, went on to win three matches at the national event improving his season record to a team-best 19-5.
