Nittany Lions drop 5th game in a row

Penn State (10-9, 2-5) struggled on offense early and dug a hole it couldn't get out of in losing at Iowa, 64-49, last night in Big Ten action.

The Nittany Lions lost for the fifth consecutive game. Junior Stanley Pringle made his first career start and led Penn State with a career-high tying 17 points. Jamelle Cornley added 15 points and played with an injured left knee in the second half. Penn State shot 39.2 percent (20 of 51) from the floor.

It took the Nittany Lions 41/2 minutes to get on the board with a Cornley jumper and they trailed Iowa (10-11, 3-5), 21-5, at 7:44 of the first half.

Men's highlights

• Chartiers Valley High school grad Mike Sherry scored 30 points in leading Clarion (10-8, 2-2 PSAC West) to an 89-80 win against visiting Shippensburg (6-13, 0-4). A freshman, Sherry was 11 of 13 on field-goal attempts and 8 of 10 on 3-point shots with seven assists. ... Edinboro (13-4, 3-0) made 57.1 percent (32 of 56) of its field-goal attempts in beating visiting IUP (10-8, 2-1), 80-60. ... California (12-4, 3-0) held off Lock Haven (1-17, 1-3) in the second half for a 72-64 win. ... Grove City (12-6) completed a two-game sweep against Geneva (10-8) for the first time sine 1989 with a 67-60 home victory. ... Thiel (7-9, 3-4 PAC) got 31 points from Joe Herrmann in an 80-75 win at Waynesburg. Tim Drakeley scored 35 points to lead Waynesburg (7-10 1-6 PAC). ... Ian McCollough scored 31 points as Saint Vincent (14-3) defeated Westminster, 87-60. ... Penn State New Kensington (12-2, 11-0 PSUAC) got 19 points from Mike Fisher and 18 from R.J. Hurt in an 85-54 home win against PS Hazleton (7-5, 7-2). ... Zach Fetchin had 22 points and 11 rebounds in leading PS Beaver (6-11, 6-4) to an 82-42 win against visiting PS Wilkes-Barre (4-9, 1-6). ... Point Park (11-10, 1-3 American Mideast) was edged, 83-79, at Roberts Wesleyan 7-13, 2-2). Chivas Whipple scored 18 points for the Pioneers. ... Seton Hill (6-10, 5-4 WVIAC) ended Alderson Broaddus' (12-4, 8-1) regular-season win streak in the conference at 26 games with a 74-71 victory.

Women's highlights

IUP (18-1, 3-0) came on in the second half to gain an 85-81 win at Edinboro (11-6, 1-2). Jahzinga Tracey had 25 points for IUP. ... Lindsay Johnson scored 19 points and led five California (16-2, 3-0) players in double figures in a 77-46 win at Lock Haven (5-13, 0-4). ... Jen Rogers scored a career-high 23 points as Washington & Jefferson (13-4, 6-2) defeated Chatham University (6-10, 2-6), 72-43. ... Grove City (7-10) upset visiting Geneva (14-3), 54-45. Grove City outscored Geneva, 32-19, in the second half. ... Orit Farchi and Autumn Himes each scored 16 points in leading Seton Hill (8-8, 4-5 WVIAC) to a 64-49 win against visiting Alderson Broaddus (2-15, 1-9). ... Saint Vincent (5-12) junior Janelle Reed scored 31 points as the Bobcats defeated visiting Westminster (11-6), 91-64. ...
