A look at some of the unsung stats, facts and story lines of the past week as we start picking up as February approaches:

Saturday

It only takes three weeks, but Eddie Sutton finally gets his first win -- No. 799 of his career -- since taking over at downtrodden San Francisco in late December. The Dons defeat Portland, 60-59, to leave Sutton one win from becoming only the fifth men's coach in NCAA Div. I history to win 800 games. Will it take another three weeks for No. 2?

Dre Smith of George Mason goes 10 for 10 from 3-point range -- an NCAA record for perfect shooting from beyond the arc -- in the Patriots' 96-75 victory against James Madison. He breaks the record of Mark Poag (Old Dominion, 1997), Markus Wilson (Evansville, 1998) and Donnie McGrath (Providence, 2005), who all were 9 for 9.

Tuesday

Duquesne lost to Drake, 77-73, on Dec. 1. As the season plays out, that four-point loss is looking pretty good. The Bulldogs, now No. 22 in the AP poll, win at Creighton, 68-60, to run their record to 17-1. How big is the win? Since Creighton's Qwest Center opened five seasons ago, 18 teams with one or no losses had visited. None had won ... until Drake.

Wednesday

In one of the games of the year, Baylor -- a team that had already celebrated this week by being ranked for the first time in nearly 40 years -- goes five overtimes to defeat Texas A&M, 116-110. "Coach has a saying that we can go all day," Baylor iron man guard Curtis Jerrells says. Jerrells proves it. He plays 53 minutes. Of his career-high 36 points, 22 come in the five extra periods.

Bringing Baylor back to earth a bit, AP basketball writer Jim O'Connell points out that the Bears played five OT periods to win once. Lafayette, he explains, has played six OT periods this season and earned six wins, including a 103-99 win vs. Navy this week to tie the NCAA record for OT wins in a season.

Is the score correct? VMI, the nation's No. 1 scoring team at 93.9 ppg including a 156-point night in November and four other games of at least 100, scores just 41 in an 85-41 loss to Winthrop. Scoring leader Reggie Williams (27.3 ppg) misses the game with an ankle injury, but that doesn't explain everything.

Thursday

IUPUI coach Ron Hunter draws national attention. He coaches a Summit League game vs. Oakland barefoot in order to raise awareness for Samaritan's Feet, a nonprofit organization that helps distribute shoes to needy children around the world. He goes in seeking donations of 40,000 pairs. Between private donations, one from Soles4Souls -- a Nashville, Tenn.-based charity -- and contributions from companies such as Converse and Wal-Mart, 110,000 pairs are committed by night's end.

"When we started this I thought 40,000 was going to be tough," Hunter tells the Indianapolis Star. "When they told me before the game we already had 100,000, honestly, I almost broke down in tears."
