Washington Sunday: Big Macs repeat as county wrestling champs, but '2' and '3' are new
Sunday, January 27, 2008

The big three was broken up at this year's Washington County Wrestling Tournament.

The top spot remained the same, as Canon-McMillan captured its third county title in convincing fashion, but the runner-up and third-place finishers changed.

Burgettstown and Ringgold replaced Trinity and McGuffey in the Nos. 2 and spots in the final standings.

"It was nice to see a couple new teams atop the standings," Fort Cherry coach Rick Chaussard said. "Burgettstown is the first Class AA team to finish second."

Burgettstown finished a distant second to Canon-McMillan, as the Big Macs accumulated 225 points in the two-day competition. The Blue Devils finished second with 165.5, while Ringgold was third at 108.5.

"We were in third place after the first day of competition, but had fallen to seventh after Saturday's first session," Ringgold coach Luke Smith said.

"I got the kids together and told them we were capable of finishing in the top three. I insisted they concentrate on beating the kids on teams that were ahead of us in the standings. They responded very well in the final rounds."

Burgettstown had eight wrestlers place among the top four in their weight classes, including three who made it to the finals. Ryan Watson won a title for the Blue Devils, while teammates Bryan Vallina and Dan Conley finished second.

Watson captured the 189-pound title with a 9-2 win over McGuffey's Nick Shuman. Vallina dropped a 5-2 decision to Canon-McMillan's Chris Pihiou in the 140-pound final. Conley lost, 5-2, in the 215-pound final to Canon-McMillan's Mike Hull.

Burgettstown also picked up big points in the consolation finals. Dominic Pulcini (103), Erich Openbrier (112), Dylan Fleming (119) and Zach Schilinski (135) placed third for the Blue Devils, while Mike Fleming (125) finished fourth.

Ringgold had one finalist and a total of four place-winners. Fred Garcia was the Rams only finalist. He dropped a 5-2 decision to Trinity freshman Kyle McWreath in the 171-pound final.

"We fielded a full team and everybody made it to the second day," said Smith. "We had four kids place and seven others who fell one win short of placing. It was a total team effort."

Neal Rands (152) and Todd Miller (189) placed third for the Rams, while Ian Mathies (140) finished fourth.

Repeat champions

Colin Johnston, Andrew Lucarini and Ron Schram were the only three Washington County champions to claim a second gold medal.

Johnston, a senior at Canon-McMillan, made his third appearance in the finals and claimed his second title by pinning Washington's Troy DeClair in the 135-pound final.

Lucarini, a junior at Fort Cherry, claimed his second consecutive 103-pound title with a narrow 3-2 win over McGuffey's Alex Dunaway. The two also met in last year's title match.

Schram claimed his second title in three years by pinning Chartiers-Houston's Victor LaPari in the 119-pound final. Schram won his first title as a 103-pound freshman, but finished third at 112 last year.

Nick Whipkey, David Grillo and Chris Stay also were previous champions, but didn't win titles this year.

Whipkey, a junior at McGuffey won at 112 pounds last year, finished second at 125 after dropping a 2-1 decision to Canon-McMillan's Nick Catalano.

Grillo, a senior at Charleroi who won at 171 pounds last year, finished fourth at 189.

Stay, a 152-pound senior at Beth-Center, sat out with an injury. He won the 140-pound county title as a sophomore, then finished third last year at 152.

Bic Macs roll a 'seven'

Johnston, Shram, Pihiou, Catalano and Hull were five of Canon-McMillan's seven champions. The other two were: Mike Ennis and Sam Brownlee.

Ennis topped Chartiers-Houston's Joey Schneider, 8-4, to win the title at 145. Heavyweight Brownlee edged Washington's Sam Miller, 3-0, in the final.

Fort Cherry, Avella, and Trinity each had two champions. Lucarini was joined on the winners platform by Rangers teammate Sam Guidi, who defeated Beth-Center's Aaron Hrutkay, 4-1, at 160.

Mitch Spencer and Kyle Appleby won titles for Avella. Spencer won his first title with a 17-2 win over Chartiers-Houston's Mike Innes at 130. Appleby claimed the 152-pound title with a 6-1 win over Canon-McMillan's Colin Ryan.

McWreath was joined on the winners platform by Trinity teammate Mike Ardeno. He defeated Washington's Patrick Gouin, 4-2, at 112 pounds.
