Pryor's presence will boost Classic Sunday
Friday, January 25, 2008

John Giammarco wants to promote high school basketball in Western Pennsylvania; Terrelle Pryor will help this weekend.

Giammarco is running the Pittsburgh High School Basketball Classic Sunday at Duquesne University's Palumbo Center. It is a three-game event, and one of the big draws is Pryor, the all-everything football/basketball star at Jeannette.

Pryor and Jeannette will play in the 7 p.m. game against Aliquippa. At 3, Upper St. Clair meets Chartiers Valley. American Christian Academy near Philadelphia plays Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) at 5. All three can be seen live on PCN television.

The Jeannette-Aliquippa contest is a rematch of the WPIAL Class AA title game last season, and most of the players on the court also knocked heads in a memorable WPIAL football semifinal in November. Jeannette won, 70-48, in the highest-scoring game in WPIAL history.

"Terrelle Pryor sells tickets," Giammarco said. "He's one of the best athletes to ever come through Western Pennsylvania. The clock is starting to wind down for Western Pennsylvania people to see him play. I'm honored he's going to be part of this event."

Aliquippa also has a football-basketball standout in Jonathan Baldwin, a Pitt football recruit. Baldwin leads WPIAL basketball in scoring .

"He's just another player to me," Pryor said. "To me, this game is just a pride thing, really. I don't like being ranked low. We're ranked No. 2 [in the Post-Gazette's WPIAL Class AA rankings]. We don't want to go any lower than that."

Beaver Falls is ranked No. 1 and Aliquippa No. 3.

"We'll get to No. 1," Pryor said. "Not before the playoffs start, but we'll get to No. 1. I guarantee you that."

The opener matches the No. 1-ranked Class AAA team (Chartiers Valley) against the No. 4 AAAA team (Upper St. Clair). The Notre Dame Prep-American Christian Academy game features outstanding individual talent. Guard Tyreke Evans of American Christian is ranked among the top 10 in the country by scouting services. Notre Dame Prep has a talented guard in Johnny Higgins, who has signed with Duquesne.

This is the third multi-game event Giammarco has staged this season. The other two were at Robert Morris.

"Basketball is on an upswing here," said Giammarco, a Montour resident. "Events like this is what they have in Cleveland, Buffalo, New York and New Jersey. We need events like this around here."

All tickets are general admission and are $12 (adults) and $5 (students).

Scoring sensation

Wilkinsburg's Darche Jackson went from the second-leading scorer on her team a year ago to the No. 1 scorer in the entire WPIAL this season.

Jackson, a junior guard, is averaging 33.3 points a game. No other girl in the WPIAL is averaging more than 25 a game. At this pace, Jackson will be one of the most prolific scorers in the WPIAL in recent history. The last player to average 33 points or more for the regular season was Monessen's Gina Naccarato, who averaged 33.6 in 1996.

The highest regular-season average in the past 20 years is 36.1 by Maude Searcy in 1990. She also played at Wilkinsburg.

Ruling the City

The Schenley boys' basketball team's City League winning streak has reached 68 games. The last time the Spartans lost a City game was to Perry, 42-37, in the 2004 championship. Schenley is 11-0 in the City this season.

Montour's Wilson looks around

Montour's Christian Wilson says he is still a Michigan recruit, but he is looking at a few other schools. Wilson made a verbal commitment to Michigan in August, but had second thoughts when Lloyd Carr retired and Rich Rodriguez became coach. Wilson was recruited by Michigan to play H-back, a hybrid between fullback and tight end. But Wilson questioned whether he would fit into Rodriguez's spread-option offense.

Wilson is considering Boston College and North Carolina and visited Boston College this past weekend. He said he has talked to Rodriguez only once.

"He hasn't been calling, and that's kind of been a concern," Wilson said. "We're talking about my position. It's just the fact of believing him."
