The Diocese of Pittsburgh will celebrate Catholic Schools Week from Sunday through Feb. 2 with many activities highlighting the theme, Catholic Schools Light the Way.
Here is a roundup of activities and programs in some West schools:
Approximately 30 students from the Junior Achievement program will visit St. Philip's Grade School in Crafton Monday to conduct education sessions.
The Rev. Al Adams, school chaplain, will be the celebrant for a Catholic Schools Week liturgy on Tuesday. Teachers Ellen Staldzynski, Timothy Fazio and Karen Kennedy will be honored as inspirational educators. During the liturgy, junior Angela Delfine will address students to kick off the Diocesan Youth Council project, a campaign for care packages for military in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Wednesday is Teacher Appreciation Day. Student Council will prepare a pancake breakfast for teachers and staff and sponsor a pep really for seniors on the basketball, hockey and bowling teams.
Next Thursday, the Junior Achievement students will visit SS Simon & Jude School in Scott. A group of students will visit St. Patrick Grade School in Canonsburg Feb. 1 to assist with their Catholic Schools Week activities.
The school will have an opening Mass at 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by the Distinguished Graduate Award and an open house with a soup sale. On Monday, pupils K-3 can invite a friend while older kids enjoy the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera Gallery of Heroes.
Tuesday features fund-raising activities to benefit mission efforts in Chimbote, Peru, plus a penmanship contest. Wednesday grades 4-8 will go to the Byham Theater for "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," while younger pupils have a religion bee, and the evening features a talent show.
Next Thursday is School Spirit Day, with pupils invited to wear sports uniforms or school colors with jeans; grades 4-8 will have a spelling bee. The first Friday Mass, principal's awards and, in 4-year-old preschool, Grandparents' Fiesta Day are on Feb. 1.
The Seton Saints Choir will sing at Mass at 9 a.m. Sunday followed by a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the school gym. Family Welcome Day is the theme for Monday, which will feature a family picnic at 10:45 a.m., school tours and registration for next year.
A student talent show will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, a teacher luncheon will be Wednesday (Teacher Appreciation Day), Grandparent Day with bingo is next Thursday starting at 1 p.m., and parent volunteers teach business concepts to pupils on Feb 1.
Closing Mass is at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 2 in Guardian Angels Church.
An all-school open house will be 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Classes will be lighting the way around the world by spotlighting a different country in each classroom.
The dress code is Crazy Mix 'n Match Day or school uniform on Monday. Grades 3 and 4 will have an Amigo morning healthy snack and activity with their invited "special person."
Tuesday is School Spirit Day, when the dress code is red and white or school uniform. Grades 5 and 6 will have an Amigo morning healthy snack and activity with their invited "special person."
The dress code Wednesday is for a Pajama or Casual Day or school uniform. Grades 7 and 8 will have an Amigo morning healthy snack and volleyball game with their invited "special person."
Next Thursday, the dress code is Dress Up or school uniform. The all-school Mass is at 8:30 a.m. A Spotlight on the World school carnival will be in the gym, with each class featuring an activity connected with its country.
The dress code on Feb. 1 is Career Attire or High School, College Sweat Shirt themes or school uniform. An all-day PTG-sponsored Career Day will be held with guest speakers.
Opening Mass is a 10 a.m. Sunday. Pupils will wear uniforms and participate in the mass. Pajama and Movie Day will be Monday when pupils can wear pajamas. A spelling bee will be Tuesday for grades 6-8. An ice cream social is at 6:30.
A science assembly is Wednesday and school spirit day is next Thursday, during which pupils may wear school shirt and jeans. There will be a pep rally and tailgate party. The week concludes Feb. 1 with a ski trip for grades 6-8.
Sunday there is an opening Liturgy followed by a continental breakfast, an open house and a book fair, which continues through Wednesday. Tuesday is Spirit Day, with jeans and school colors; it will feature a teacher appreciation breakfast.
Wednesday will feature assemblies by Kinorea "Two Feather" Tigri on Native American artifacts, plus pottery classes for grades 5-8. Next Thursday will be Favorite Team Day. Pupils can wear jeans, tennis shoes and their favorite team's shirt. There will also be the Student Council's Knowledge Game. A $1 Dress-Down Day is Feb. 1 with proceeds going to Catholic missions. There is a family dance in the evening.
Sunday will feature an opening Mass and pancake breakfast, followed by the Great Beginnings Award and a theme basket raffle. Monday is Teacher Appreciation Day, and Tuesday is Red, White and Blue Day, and includes a living rosary to raise money for the mission in Chimbote, Peru, and a visit from the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. Tuesday will also see the opening of the three-day book fair.
On Wednesday, grades 1-8 will go to the Byham Theater for "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" while younger children host the community's day-care centers and other preschools. Next Thursday is School Spirit Day, with kids invited to wear their sports uniforms or school colors. There also will be a safety program with Officer Phil for kindergarten-grade 4. Dress-Down Day is Feb. 1 with a closing Mass, mechanical dog races, a family picnic and noon dismissal.
A book fair will be Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, students from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School will present a program, "I am Lovable and Capable," to K-8 pupils. Next Thursday is Special Persons Day, and Feb. 1 is Career Day.
An open house event, Why 'n Dine, from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday will focus on why St. Malachy is an excellent educational choice and then feature a pasta dinner. The event will also include a fund-raising art show and a book fair. The dinner is offered by the St. Malachy Knights of Columbus and is $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12.
Pupils will be able to lunch with a guest on Tuesday, try square dancing on Wednesday and get a visit from Radical Reptiles next Thursday. On Feb. 1, the Rev. Kris Stubna, secretary of education for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, will concelebrate the 8:45 a.m. children's Mass.
The opening Mass is at 4 p.m. Saturday with family activities afterward. Monday features Buddy Day, Pajama Day and breakfast at 9 a.m. with buddies. A pupil will be principal for a day and a teacher appreciation assembly will be Tuesday.
Junior Achievement Day is Wednesday and lunch will be served during regular lunch periods.
Dress Down and Blue and White Day is next Thursday, along with parent/teacher conferences for grades 5-8 and an auction for kindergarten-grade 4. The week concludes Feb. 1 with parent/teacher conferences for kindergarten-grade 4 , Multicultural Day for 5-8, an auction for grades 5-8 and an amateur night program at 6:30.
Family fun night will be 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, student thank you's will be featured at Sunday Masses and Junior Achievement Day is Monday. Also, grade 3 will observe Crazy Shoes Day, and grade 2 will conduct friendship interviews.
On Tuesday, registration will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. for preschool, prekindergarten and kindergarten. There will be an art exhibit, book fair, world cultures display (grade 6), hispanic world display (grade 8), paper people (grade 1), community dioramas (grade 1), Pennsylvania history projects (grade 4), Catholic customs (grade 2), autobiographies (grade 8), rocket display (grade 8), science and reading projects (grade 3).
Wednesday will feature crazy olympics, brain quest (grade 6), popcorn and virtues (grade 2), Crazy Socks Day (grade 3) and Mother Goose Story time (preschool, kindergarten).
Spirit day is next Thursday, with pupils vs. faculty volleyball, reader's theater (grade 1), puzzle day (grade 2), Catholic customs and traditions (grade 2), I am Special (preschool) and hat day (grade 3).
Skills showcase talent show (grades 6-8) will be Feb. 1, along with the program No Joke Don't Smoke (grade 2), I am Special (prekindergarten), reader's theater (grade 3) and Games Day (grade 3). The week concludes Feb. 2 with an alumni event with distinguished graduates recognized and a banquet in Father Kelty Hall.
Open house sessions for families of children from 3 years old through grade 8 interested in enrolling next year will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Monday is Green and White Day, featuring a basketball game between 8th-graders and a team of teachers and parents. Tuesday will be an all-school Mass, a movie day for kindergarten-grade 4, a Faith in Action program for grades 5-8 and open house with academic fair from 6 to 8.
On Wednesday, pupils may bring a favorite person to lunch. It is Movie Day for grades 5-8. A bagel breakfast is next Thursday, along with all-school dress down and a Junior Achievement program. Feb. 1 features a faith symposium for grades 5-8. It is also Dress Crazy Day.
Sunday will feature opening Mass and open house. Monday will be a sports-teams Dress Day and a cakewalk to raise funds for the Chimbote, Peru, mission. Tuesday is Red, White and Blue Dress Day, with a visit from the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, letters for and visits from military personnel and a Teddy Bear Tea and early registration for prospective kindergartners.
Wednesday is the start of the magazine sale, and also will include school spirit relay races and a pep rally. Next Thursday will be Career Dress Day, with pastors visiting for lunch, a Catholic trivia game and an ice-cream social with dads serving.
A closing Mass is Feb. 1 along with the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera's Gallery of Heroes Program and early dismissal. Feb. 2 is "Mathcounts" at Geneva College.
A pancake breakfast will follow all Masses Sunday; Monday will be St. Titus shirt and hat day, with a prayer service and bowling in the morning and art or games in the afternoon. Tuesday is Team Color Day and the school olympics.
Wednesday is Celebrity Look-Alike Day, with a game show put on by eighth-graders in the morning and a production of "Jonah and the Whale" in the afternoon. Next Thursday is Pajamas and Crazy Hair Day, with movies and valentines for veterans. Feb. 1 is Dance Costume Day, with a parents and guests breakfast, a dance jamboree and a family picnic.
