'TORCHWOOD: SEASON ONE'

4 stars = Outstanding
Ratings explained

If you ignored "Torchwood" because you think it's some sci-fi geekfest or because you don't like its parent series, "Doctor Who," you are missing out on well-written, sexy adult fun with great special effects and a magnetic young cast.

"Torchwood" fans will be delighted with this seven-disc DVD set ($79.98) whose many special features are a shining example of what DVD special features should be. Interviews with the cast, writers, directors and special-effects people are cut down to the most telling, interesting insights. Mini-documentaries focus on technical aspects of the series such as how gore is created and how the Torchwood SUV was designed. Also, featurettes examine alien villains and the complicated relationships between Torchwood team members and other characters.

Commentary on all 13 episodes showcases an intensely creative and inventive roster of talent. Comments are not only interesting and candid but also gracious toward unsung heroes like composers and extras. The potpourri of English, Welsh and Scottish accents may take a while for your ears to get used to, but don't give up. It's worth it.
