PG East: Two from area boost W&J women's team

Two district players are helping the Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team to a successful season.

Greensburg Central Catholic graduate Maggie Gibson, a 6-foot-1 sophomore forward, leads the Presidents in scoring (13.1 points per game) and rebounding (9.5 per game).

Gibson ranks first in the Presidents' Athletic Conference in field goal percentage (65.5 percent). She also ranks third in rebounding and eighth in scoring.

Riverview graduate Veronica Kust, a 5-9 junior guard known for her defense, is averaging 3.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. She started 27 of 29 games last year and averaged 3.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.

W&J had an 11-4 record, 4-2 in the PAC before last night's game against Bethany.

Taking the plunge


Gateway High School graduate Conor Simpson has been named Presidents' Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week.

Simpson, a junior at Westminster College, earned a combined five wins, as the Titans went 3-0 from Jan. 9-12. Westminster recorded a double-dual meet sweep of Rollins and Gordon Jan. 9, then won at Baldwin-Wallace Jan. 12.

In the double dual against Rollins and Gordon, Simpson captured the 100 butterfly (55.80 seconds) and 200 butterfly (2:02.70), then swam a leg on the 400 medley relay.

At Baldwin-Wallace, Simpson won the 200 freestyle (1:51.60) and 500 freestyle (5:00.44).

Athlete of the week


Oakland Catholic graduate Angela Tassari has been named the West Virginia Wesleyan Athlete of the Week.

Tassari, a sophomore, contributed 36 points and 29 rebounds in three West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games against Glenville State, Charleston and Ohio Valley.

For the week, Tassari, a 6-2t center, was 11 for 19 from the floor and a red-hot 20 of 24 from the free-throw line. She also blocked 11 shots and collected 4 steals. Her best outing was against Ohio Valley where she owned a double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Bobcats are 7-6 overall, 5-2 in WVIAC play.
