Outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever John Grabow agreed to one-year contracts with the Pirates to avoid arbitration, but second baseman Freddy Sanchez did not.
Noon today was Major League Baseball's deadline for arbitration-eligible players and teams to exchange figures, a process in which each side submits a salary, and a three-member panel chooses one or the other during hearings Feb. 1-20. All three of the Pirates' players in that category did so, but Nady and Grabow settled shortly after the deadline.
Nady will make $3.35 million in base pay in 2008, plus as much as $250,000 in incentive bonuses for plate appearances. Grabow will make $1.135 in base pay, plus as much as $75,000 in bonuses for appearances.
The figure Sanchez submitted was $4.9 million, and the team submitted $4.1 million. Settlements still can be reached at any point before the scheduled hearing, and they usually are. That was the case with Sanchez last year.
Sanchez, 29, made $2.75 million last season, batting .304 with 11 home runs and 81 RBIs.
Nady, 29, made $2.15 million, batting .278 with 20 home runs and 72 RBIs despite missing significant time to various injuries and ailments.
Grabow, 29, made $832,500, posting a 4.53 ERA in 63 appearances.
