Cybertainment: Penn reappears; 'KateModern' kills; Scrabulous endangered
Friday, January 18, 2008

MAGICIAN PENN JILLETTE HAS TRANSFORMED HIMSELF YET AGAIN. This time, he's turned into a libertarian video blogger.

The online series "Penn Says," launched recently on Sony's Crackle site, will have one- to three-minute videos posted about four times a week. The unscripted episodes feature Teller turning a webcam's lens onto himself and ranting on religion, politics, pop culture or whatever comes to mind.

"When something gets my goat or I want to get someone else's goat or other farm animal, I'll flip on my camera and rave about it -- half-cocked, from inside my head, electronically to inside your head in minutes. No script, no thinking, so I might be wrong. I'm counting on you to keep me honest with videos right back to me," Jillette said in a statement during the series launch.

Viewers can post responses on the Crackle site.

"Penn Says" is Teller's latest foray into the media world. He co-hosts a Showtime comedy/documentary series with partner in magic Teller ("Penn and Teller: Bull• • • • !") and also hosted a controversial talk show on CBS Radio's Free FM talk format for a year.

THE SECOND SEASON OF BRITISH WEB SERIES "KateModern" HAS BEGUN on social networking site Bebo.

The first season, which debuted in July, ended with a cliiffhanger: the disappearance of heroine Kate (Alexandra Weaver).

In the second-season premiere, viewers learned that she has been murdered. Now the series has turned into a whodunit mystery, where both characters and audience will try to solve the case.

The series, a popular one for Bebo with more than 35 million views, combines short one- to four-minute episodes with interactive elements.

Newcomers to the series can catch up to previous episodes at Bebo's site.

A POPULAR VERSION OF SCRABBLE IS THE LATEST ENDANGERED SPECIES IN CYBERSPACE. Hasbro Inc. (owner of the Scrabble game rights in the U.S. and Canada) and Mattel Inc., which owns rights elsewhere, have issued a cease-and-desist order to Scrabulous developers and hosters. The companies are urging players to switch to legal Scrabble sites.

Scrabulous can be played through social networking site Facebook, where it has more than 600,000 daily users, or through the Scrabulous site. The game can be played with others around the world, in a solitaire version or against the computer.

In response, Facebook users launched a "save Scrabulous" campaign. Scrabulous is the creation of two brother/entrepreneurs, Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla.

WHILE THE FATE OF SCRABULOUS IS BEING DECIDED, FACEBOOK HAS A NEW GAME FOR YOU. Game developer Legacy Interactive is debuting a social-networking version of "The Apprentice."

In this version, players try to move ahead in the Trump organization by working as servers in a sushi restaurant. Facebook members can compete against their network of friends on the site and compare scores.
