Forbes Avenue into Oakland will be closed this weekend as it was over the weekend of Jan. 4-6 for continuing demolition of the Boulevard of Allies bridge, part of the $29 million interchange improvement project.
The closing will start at 10 p.m. tomorrow and end no later than 6 a.m. Monday, by which time the contractor is required to reopen the one-way street.
The primary detour will take motorists out the Parkway East/I-376 to the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange, where they'll be circled back via the Parkway East inbound to the Oakland exit.
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials advised people to use alternate routes with which they're familiar to avoid confusion and delays.
This weekend, the deteriorated mainline Boulevard of Allies bridge, which has been closed in both directions, will be dropped onto Forbes Avenue on a 4-foot-thick cushion of dirt, steel plates and timber designed to protect the road and underground utilities.
PennDOT has chosen to close Forbes on weekends when the University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team is not playing home games.
Meanwhile, engineers have been working with the contractor and city officials to tweak traffic patterns, signs and signals to improve Oakland access while the "gateway" project continues through November.
