Disney is looking for a CMO
Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Disney's ad for a Chief Magic Officer.

WANTED: Chief magic official, aka, CMO. Job duties include creating magical dreams for guests from around the world. The ideal candidate must be happy, never grumpy, able to easily befriend dwarves, dogs, monsters and mice. Must have good manners but can pillage and plunder with pirates when necessary. Must have an interest in oversized teacups and flying elephants.

If you can't cut it in the reality sector, Disney has a job for you. To celebrate its Year of a Million Dreams, the corporation is looking for a part-time magic director who would help create magical experiences for guests in all of the Disney parks.

The job that would run from May through the end of the year would be open to anyone 21 or over.

"It's for whomever has a love for Disney and believes they were made for this position," said a Disney spokeswoman (who goes nameless because, well, it's all part of the fantasy).

The chief magic official doesn't really need to know magic or perform traditional magic, although he or she will have the chance to meet with Disney Imagineers to see how magic is created, the spokeswoman said.

The position requires travel, including to Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and Walt Disney World parks south of Orlando, Fla., during weekdays and on some weekends. The CMO would be compensated for hours spent performing, as well as air fare, accommodations and would have a spending allowance. The spokeswoman would not discuss the specific rate.

Application deadline is Jan. 27. Applicants must take a seven-question "Magic Aptitude Test" to see if they have the skills to perform as magic director. They also must submit a 60-second video resume online at DreamCMO.com, which should capture their personality and explain why they would make a good CMO.

A Disney panel will narrow the submissions to 10 video resumes and then the process turns into an "American Idol"-like contest. The videos will be posted on the Web site and voted on by the public. The three top vote-getters will be invited to Walt Disney World for a three-day event where they again will be videotaped. Those videos will be posted on the site and voted on again by the public.

The top vote-getter will be named CMO.

All the details are available at DreamCMO.com.
