At 103, she's still a card

Pauline Marnoni

Most people never get to celebrate a 100th birthday. Pauline Marnoni celebrated her 103rd twice -- with her family at the Pittsburgh Field Club in Fox Chapel and with friends at Cumberland Crossing in McCandless, where she lives.

She was born on Jan. 6, 1905, in Winfield, Butler County. One of 10 children, she and her family moved to Jeannette, where she worked as a secretary-bookkeeper at Westmoreland Glass Co.

In 1930, she wed Dominic Marnoni, and they had four children: Jack of Pennsylvania, Gino of California, Annette of Pennsylvania and Barbara of Massachusetts. She also has nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Marnoni, an avid reader, loved to travel when she was younger, making trips to the Greek Isles and Italy, once flying with other Pittsburghers on the Concorde. She regularly plays bingo and poker at Cumberland Crossing, continuing a love for cards that began when she was a girl. Nearly a century later, she's still a winner.

If you or a friend or a relative recently turned 100 or will soon do so, the Post-Gazette would like to hear from you. On an occasional basis, the Celebrations page will feature short stories on people marking their 100th year.

To be included, send the honoree's biographical information and your phone number to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Century Club, Attn: Kevin Kirkland, 34 Blvd. of the Allies, Pittsburgh 15222. Fax: 412-263-1313. E-mail: kkirkland@post-gazette.com.
