It's the second week of January already. Do you know where your team is? A look at some of the unsung stats, facts and story lines of the past week:
Monday
Oh, my! Woe, my! Almost zero, my! Savannah State visits Kansas State and sets the art of shooting back decades. The Tigers score just four points in the first half while shooting an unbelievable 4.3 percent from the floor to fall behind the Wildcats, 48-4, en route to an 85-25 loss. It is not a record, though. North Carolina -- Dean Smith's North Carolina -- scored no points in a 7-0 half vs. Duke in the pre-shot clock days of 1979.
Wednesday
Speaking of North Carolina, 6-foot-11 All-American Tyler Hansbrough adds a piece of folklore to an already impressive resume with a dunk vs. UNC-Asheville. But not just any dunk. Starting at the free-throw line, Hansbrough charges down the lane, leaps and throws a two-handed dunk down over Kenny George. So what? So George is 7-7 and, according to him, had not been dunked on in three years. Added George: "I forgot to jump."
Any coach would call it a basketball sin. Protecting a 61-59 lead, Tulane fouls UAB's Ed Berrios in the act of shooting a 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds to play. Berrios knocks down all three free throws and the Green Wave snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.
Thursday
Rick Majerus is a smart basketball coach. So what is he doing borrowing a game plan from Savannah State's Howard Broadnax? Majerus' Saint Louis team sets a modern NCAA Div. I record by scoring just 20 points in a 49-20 Atlantic 10 loss to George Washington. The Billikens miss 23 consecutive shots at one point. "We have some issues in terms of our offensive proficiency," Majerus says. Ya don't say.
Saturday
Although Bob Knight won't admit to caring about milestones, he nevertheless fails in his first bid to become the first Division I men's coach to win 900 games as Texas Tech falters in the second half and loses to Oklahoma State, 74-55.
This week
Bob Knight's second attempt at 900 wins comes Wednesday night when the Red Raiders host Texas A&M (9:30 p.m., ESPN2). ... Ohio State travels to Knoxville to challenge No. 8 Tennessee Saturday (3:30 p.m., KDKA).
