Reality TV: Getting 'Naked'
Friday, January 11, 2008

I was skeptical at first about Lifetime's new series, "How to Look Good Naked." Do we really need another feel-good makeover show? But the always entertaining Carson Kressley is the perfect host for the series, which aims to make self-conscious, average-sized women feel like beauty queens, with or without clothes on. "Unite if you're ready to turn body loathing into body loving!" Carson exclaims.

His first study is of Layla, 32, who has been dieting for 20 years. "I just feel like it's so much time wasted, and there's so many other things I could have been concentrating on," Layla says. Carson forces Layla to strip down to her skivvies in front of a full-length mirror, which drives her to tears. But through the magic of reality TV, within a half-hour she's loving herself. Carson helps Layla pick out better undergarments and more flattering clothes. She gets a haircut and new makeup, and even poses for a photo shoot - nude! "This is probably the funnest day of my life. I feel really sexy and I feel really beautiful. Every single second was perfect," Layla says, vowing to never diet again. Kressley's "perception revolution" show is sweet, uplifting and fun. Maybe we do need another makeover show after all.

"How to Look Good Naked" airs tonight at 9 on Lifetime.

On the season three premiere of "Rob & Big," Rob discovers a little gift in his swimming pool. Someone couldn't make it to the bathroom in time! Rob's convinced his cousin/assistant, Drama, is guilty, but he takes a lie detector test and is clean. So Rob and Big drain the pool, install security cameras and buy a neat net gun for protection. Rob and bulldog Meaty skate the empty pool, and Rob's inspired to hire a muralist to paint an interesting seascape on the pool's bottom. The pool is refilled, and all is well in the house. Plus Rob gets to test out his new net gun on Drama. "Net gun is pretty hot. It's the new mace," he says. Thank goodness this show is back, I've really missed the adventures of Rob, Big, Meaty and Mini-Horse. This show is the best thing to air on MTV since "Viva la Bam."

"Rob & Big" airs Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. on MTV.

On "The Biggest Loser," the Black Team, brothers Mark and Jay, win the see-saw challenge and earn a phone call home, which they share with three other teams. They also win the eating challenge, with Mark consuming the most calories for $5,000. The trainers are upset he does this, but the team still finishes second at the weigh-in with 2.19 percent weight lost. The Orange Team, mom Jackie and son Dan, win for the second week in a row, losing an impressive 3.10 percent in an otherwise lackluster week. Yellow team Kelly and her ex-husband, Paul, are in the bottom two with husband and wife Brown Team, Curtis and Mallory. Is it a coincidence that someone from each team carelessly ate during the challenge? I doubt it. The Brown Team is out, but its members are continuing to lose weight at home. Curtis has lost 58 pounds, while Mallory lost 20 pounds and now fits in her daughter's size 9 jeans!

"The Biggest Loser" airs Tuesday at 8 p.m. on NBC.

On "The Amazing Race," the final four teams travel from Mumbai, India, to Osaka, Japan, and couple TK & Rachel quickly fall behind when they take different flights than the other teams. Luckily for them it's a nonelimination leg, but they finish three hours behind the other teams, and will start three hours later and have to complete an extra U-Turn task on the next leg, which determines the final three. Meanwhile, Ron & Christina gain the lead thanks to Christina's ability to speak Japanese. Plus, Ron is finally kinder to his daughter, and Christina is sure that's why they finish first at the Pit Stop at Tempozan Park. Obnoxious couple Nate & Jen finish second, and look like sore losers when they realize they're not first. Maybe if they didn't fight so much, they'd have better karma. I really hope they lose the next leg and fail to make it into the finale. Finally, Nick & Don finish third, with the grandson carrying his grandfather's bag across the finish line. "I'm 45 years older than just about everybody in the race and I'm still hanging in there," Don says. I'm rooting for these two underdogs.

"Amazing Race" airs Sunday after "60 Minutes" on CBS.

On "Project Runway," the designers are challenged to make prom dresses for high school students. Kit's edgy, colorful creation for Brie is my favorite, although in judging, she falls in the middle of the pack. Victoria wins the challenge with her bright blue, bejeweled dress. Christian ends up with a nitpicky client named Maddie. Nina says she doesn't like Christian blaming Maddie for his tacky dress, and he ends up in the bottom two with Kevin. No surprise outrageous Christian is safe. Kevin didn't hem his cheap-looking, bright red dress. Judge Michael Kors says it looks like it cost $29.95 - ouch! Kevin's out.

"Project Runway" airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. on Bravo.

On the "I Love New York 2" reunion, VH1's favorite bachelorette returns with her harem of suitors and her wacko mother. To everyone's surprise, not only has New York found love, so has Sister Patterson, who makes out with Champion for all to see. So what happened to New York's dad? "That's in the past, and this is future," Sister Patterson says of Champion. We also visit The Entertainer looking like a mama's boy, living in his parents' basement. New York's new love, Tailor Made, shows up with yet another gift for her: a box containing his finalized divorce papers. New York and Tailor Made admit they've been living together since the show finished taping and she accepts another marriage proposal from him. But the highlight of the night is when Mr. Wise rushes the stage and jumps Tailor Made. Sadly, Tailor Made doesn't get a chance to spit in his face again, and only comes up with "Yeah, I'm great. Anyone have a lint brush?" Lame!

On "The Girls Next Door," it's time for the Playboy Golf Scramble annual tournament. Around 300 Playboy Girls of Golf join celebrities to hit the links for charity, and Kendra has her game face on. Refusing to wear a traditional white Playboy golf skirt and top, Kendra stands out in a black tank top and teeny yellow skirt. She wows the male golfers with her nontraditional look and impressive swing?? until she visits the bars on the course one too many times and her game winds up in the rough. Later, the Girls visit the home of Captain Bob and Mary, Hef's longtime assistant, where the ladies play cards and Kendra watches football with Bob. "Really relaxing and chilling and watching football over at Captain Bob and Mary's house - that's the life right there," Kendra says. A few days later back at the Mansion, a grateful staff surprises Mary with a birthday party. "Mary's totally the glue to everything that goes on at the Mansion. She's the gatekeeper for Hef. She just, like, holds everything together, but she's still a part of the family and a friend to everyone," Bridget says.

"The Girls Next Door" airs Sunday at 10 p.m. on E!

On last week's premiere of "The Celebrity Apprentice," we're introduced to the 14 celebs vying for the title of Donald Trump's "Best Business Brain," with all winnings going to charity. It's the men (Hydra) vs. the women (Empresario), and for their first task, the celebrities must sell hot dogs on the streets of Manhattan. The women, led by sort-of-celebrity Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth, are carried by actress/author Marilu Henner, who contacts generous friends who buy a few bottles of water for $5,000 each. And while softballer Jennie Finch gets New York Met David Wright to buy out their stock of hot dogs, the women's earnings of $17,038.79 aren't enough for the win. The men, led by actor Stephen Baldwin, use their celebrity status to sell hot dogs and photographs for top dollar. Plus KISS frontman Gene Simmons has a few of his generous pals buy some pricey hot dogs, and Hyrda earns $52,286! The combined winnings go to the charity of Stephen's choice - The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund. In the Boardroom, Omarosa buries teammate Tiffany Fallon over model Carol Alt. The Playboy Playmate has a hard time defending herself when Trump says she should have called Hugh Hefner for a donation. "I was holding back for a bigger task," admits. Forget about saving it for later, there is no later. This is the time. "Tiffany, you're fired!" Trump says.

"Celebrity Apprentice airs Thursday at 9 p.m. on NBC.

Crybaby of the Week

... is New York on VH1's "I Love New York 2" reunion show. When she fake-reunites with Tailor Made onstage, the tears begin to flow. "You know, can I just tell you, baby, you mean so much to me. And I thank you so much for coming out and trying out for 'I Love New York' because you're more than I ever thought I would find. I love you so much," she's says, crying. It seems so phony! New York says she's found her man and this is the last time we'll see her on a reality show looking for love, but I don't buy it.
