Tree removal upsets city residents
Thursday, January 10, 2008

Less than 100 people attended a meeting about removal of street trees.

The Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition called for the meeting last night at the Children's Institute.

Residents have been anxious and upset about not being notified about removal of trees. City Council President Doug Shields and Councilman Bill Peduto sought to defuse residents' anger and urged them to get involved in tree planning and policy.

David Jahn, city forester, said the most urgent removal of trees -- 909 were made top priority because of disease and instability issues -- has largely been completed. Squirrel Hill has been hit hard in recent months as the city tried to catch up on a seven-year plan to care for trees.
