Negotiators for the Pittsburgh Public Schools and Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers bargained for several hours yesterday, but union President John Tarka said "I don't think the meeting went very well."
The parties resume negotiations tomorrow.
Fears of a strike have intensified in recent weeks, but district Chief of Staff Lisa Fischetti said no strike date has been set.
Nearly 3,500 teachers and other employees represented by three PFT bargaining units have been without contracts since June 30. In October, union members authorized their leadership to call a strike if necessary. The union must give at least 48 hours notice before a walkout.
No bargaining sessions have been scheduled beyond Friday.
