The CW returns with 'girlicious' midseason lineup
Thursday, January 10, 2008

Since Asia didn't quite work out for the Pussycat Dolls last year, they're back this February to find another doll.

"Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious" is one of three reality shows that The CW boasts this upcoming midseason in order to provide original programming to its schedule. "Girlicious" will premiere Feb. 18 at 9 p.m., following "Gossip Girl," in its new day and time, beginning Jan. 28. Until the writers' strike ends, there will be no new episodes of the freshman drama, but it has been wisely moved out of the path of Fox's juggernaut "American Idol."

As far as Tuesdays go, "One Tree Hill" has made its midseason debut and the few fresh episodes of that devilish comedy "Reaper" will begin their run on Jan. 15. Fast forward to March 11, and the fifth season of the social experiment reality show "Beauty & the Geek" will debut.

Paulina Porizkova will try her hand at judging for the 10th cycle of "America's Next Top Model" on Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. followed by an encore presentation of "Girlicious."

"Reaper" makes yet another move, however. After returning Jan. 15, it will make a leap on Feb. 28 to Thursdays following "Smallville," which still appears to have a handful of new episodes yet to take flight.

Beginning Feb. 10, the CW's new Sunday lineup will feature its entertainment trend program "CW Now" at 7 p.m., followed by an hour block of "Everybody Hates Chris." Apparently "Chris" had shot a whole load of its episodes in advance, and so will be the draw with its first half hour as a repeat and second half hour as new material. "Aliens in America," "Girlfriends" and "The Game" round out the evening. (Zap2it.com)

NBC'S OLYMPICS PLAN

NBC will have hundreds of hours of streaming video from the 2008 Olympics on its own site, but in case that's not enough, the network is branching out for even more coverage of the Games.

The network has struck a deal with Microsoft to create a huge Olympics presence on MSN. The agreement, announced this week by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates Sunday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, will create "NBCOlympics.com on MSN," a service that will deliver more than 2,000 hours of streaming video and interactive features to MSN during the Olympics, scheduled to open Aug. 8 in Beijing.

The deal will bring some 2,200 hours of live streaming video from Beijing using Microsoft's Silverlight software. During peak event times, up to 20 video streams will be available to users at once. Additionally, viewers will have access to 3,000 hours of event replays, highlights and interviews to watch at their convenience.

The Silverlight player will also let fans watch full-screen video and overlay results, statistics and other data on their screens. (Zap2it.com)

'THE MOLE' RETURNS

"The Mole" has infiltrated ABC once again.

The network announced Tuesday that it's bringing back the unscripted series for a summertime run. By the time it airs, it will have been more than four years since the most recent incarnation of the game -- a celebrity version -- aired, and nearly six years since the last non-celeb version.

For those who don't remember, "The Mole" is a game in which players work together on a series of tasks with cash prizes attached. One of them, however, is the Mole, a saboteur working to keep the other players from collecting their rewards. Each episode ends with contestants answering a series of questions about the Mole; whoever scores lowest is eliminated. The last non-Mole standing wins a hefty cash prize.

The show, hosted by a pre-CNN Anderson Cooper, earned decent ratings as a midseason show in early 2001, but a second season was quickly pulled from ABC's fall 2001 schedule. It returned in the summer of 2002 and, against milder competition, finished second in its time slot among adults 18-34 and adults 18-49. Two seasons of "Celebrity Mole," hosted by Ahmad Rashad, followed in 2003 and 2004, with the latter averaging 8.3 million viewers per week.

"Mole" 3.0 is currently searching for a new host, as well as contestants. Producer Stone & Company also promises new challenges and a beefed-up interactive element for home viewers. (Zap2it.com)
