PG East: Area players receive PAC honors
Thursday, January 10, 2008

Ten athletes who graduated from PG East area high schools have been honored by the Presidents' Athletic Conference for their performances on the football field this past season.

Penn-Trafford graduate Dave Bucar, Gateway graduate Matt Houy and Greensburg Central Catholic grad Mike Baker were voted to the first team All-PAC.

Houy and Bucar, junior offensive linemen at Washington & Jefferson College, helped the Presidents finish with the nation's second-ranked total offense and a school-record 518.7 yards per game.

Houy was also voted to the first team of the D3football.com All-South Region Team, while Bucar was a third-team choice. Houy was also a first-team selection on the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.

Baker, a junior defensive back at Grove City College, led the Wolverines with five interceptions, 11 pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble. He also had 58 tackles.

Westinghouse High School graduate Milton Joyner and Kiski Area graduate Dan Hess were voted second-team All-PAC.

Joyner, a senior quarterback, was named to the first team for the second time, but at a different position. After spending his first three seasons as a wide receiver and earning spots in the top 10 at the school in career receptions (114) and yards (1,263), he shifted to quarterback and had a record-setting year.

Joyner completed 53 percent of his passes (162 of 304) for 2,087 yards, becoming just the third Bethany quarterback to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a season. Joyner also tossed 21 touchdown passes to break the school's single-season mark. In addition, he ran for five touchdowns and 223 yards.

Hess, a junior running back at Thiel, rushed for 867 yards and 11 touchdowns on 205 carries. He also caught 11 passes for 53 yards. Hess set a pair of school records by rushing for 327 yards and five touchdowns in a 62-14 win against Saint Vincent.

Four other area players received honorable mention: Washington & Jefferson defensive back Craig Sedunov (Yough), Westminster wide receiver Jason Discello (Valley), Grove City linebacker Adam Eichler (East Allegheny) and Waynesburg offensive lineman Adam Pastrnak (Jeannette).

Jeannette graduate Rob James received PAC Coaches' Honors, which are the equivalent of all-conference recognition for schools that are in provisional status in NCAA Division III. James is a sophomore wide receiver at Saint Vincent College.

Scholar-Athlete

Gateway High graduate Conor Simpson was selected at one of two PAC Scholar-Athletes for November.

A junior on the Westminster College swim team, he won the 500 freestyle at the Wooster Invitational and was a major point scorer in helping Westminster to a first-place finish.

A political science major, Simpson has a 3.8 cumulative grade-point average.
