Scott Bradley has had 20 fights since he started out in amateur boxing back in 2005, so there's no reason for the Baldwin High School senior to be nervous about his next bout, which will take place Jan. 19.
"I usually don't get nervous, but we'll see," he said. "It's just another fight."
But that doesn't mean it isn't important to Bradley. What makes this fight stand out to him is its location. This 18-year-old pugilist will take part in one of two main events in what's being called "The Battle for Baldwin," a boxing card that will take place at Baldwin High School's new gymnasium.
The Exercise Warehouse, along with the South Park Boxing Club, is sponsoring the USA Amateur Boxing show, which is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. The card is believed to be the first to be held at the high school.
"It's a big deal to me," Bradley said. "It'll be cool to fight in front of my friends."
Many of those friends have been surprised to learn that a boxing card is coming to their school. Bradley said he has encountered some disbelieving glances when selling tickets.
"They didn't believe it at first, but now they see the fliers everywhere," he said.
Bradley, who fights for South Park under coach Robert Healy, will compete at 141 pounds. He will share the top billing with heavyweight Brian Wilkesmore, a 2002 Baldwin graduate. In all, 10 other USA tournament bouts are scheduled. The pairings were to be determined last night.
Wilkesmore, who left the Marines in May after serving three tours of duty in Iraq, said fighting in front of his home crowd will provide extra motivation.
"It's going to be business as usual for me, but I'm looking forward to it," said Wilkesmore, who competes for the 3rd Avenue Gym under trainer Rick Manning. "There will be a lot of family and friends there. It'll pump me up."
Bringing boxing to Baldwin High School was the idea of Bradley's father, also named Scott, who is the show's coordinator. The elder Bradley got the idea after seeing the school's new gymnasium for the first time.
"I was really impressed," he said. "It's such a great place. I just had to try to do something."
Bradley approached Baldwin athletic director Vince Sortino with what he thought was a unique way to show off the building.
"We have this beautiful new sports facility," Bradley said. "The local taxpayers can come out and see the facility and also watch some boxing, something they wouldn't normally see. I'm hoping to get a lot of people out for this."
Other area fighters scheduled to appear on the card include Shawn Conway from Seton-La Salle High School, Matt Conway from Brookline, Sam Vasqueze from Monessen, Blaise Santerello from South Park Boxing, Sam Suska from Carrick, Andrew Zezza and Matt Mazzonne from Serra Catholic High School, Shawn Cusick from Baldwin, Luke Gloekel from Carrick Middle School and Aaron Cimino from Central Catholic High School.
