At 102, Hazel Ramsey remains as willful and determined as ever, walking when she shouldn't and insisting she still "baby sits" her younger sister, LaVerne. But even she won't break that old-fashioned rule: No white after Labor Day.
She was born on Dec. 28, 1905, in the Greenock section of Elizabeth Township, the fourth of William and Mollie Morgenstern's five children. After graduating from Douglas Business College in 1922, she worked as a bookkeeper, teller or payroll clerk at several McKeesport businesses including the First National Bank and the U.S. Steel National Tube Works.
In 1953, she married Robert Ramsey. When Bethlehem Steel transferred him in 1963 to its South Chicago plant, she retired from business but continued sewing, baking, gardening and canning. They returned to the area in 1980 after Mr. Ramsey retired. He died in 1988.
Mrs. Ramsey and her sister currently share a room in Mt. Vernon of Elizabeth personal care home in Elizabeth Township. She has many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
