NFL Notebook: Parcells begins shuffle in Miami
Tuesday, January 01, 2008

Shoes and other equipment filled 4-foot-high bins in the Miami Dolphins' locker room yesterday, signaling the start of the offseason.

Another sign: upheaval in the offices upstairs.

The Dolphins' latest shake-up began before noon when new boss Bill Parcells fired general manager Randy Mueller and two other members of the player personnel staff. Jeff Ireland, vice president of college and pro scouting for the Dallas Cowboys, was the front-runner to replace Mueller and confirmed he was flying to South Florida today for an interview.

Still undetermined was the future of coach Cam Cameron, who went 1-15 in his first year as an NFL head coach. He awaited a fateful meeting with Parcells.

"There's going to be an opportunity in the next few days to sit down and talk with Bill," Cameron said. "We'll treat it as an exchange between two guys who want to see the Miami Dolphins be successful, and what it's going to take to do that."

Bills

Marv Levy, 10 years to the day after he retired as the head coach, called it quits again, stepping down after two years as the team's general manager. As encores go, his second stint in Buffalo didn't come anywhere near to matching the first, when Levy, 82, established his Hall of Fame credentials by coaching the Bills to an unprecedented four consecutive AFC titles in the early 1990s.

Broncos

Wide receiver Javon Walker stopped short of demanding a trade like he did two years ago in Green Bay, but he suggested that it might be best for everyone if Denver sent him packing.

"It's not that they don't want me here, but I just don't think it's the best fit for me," Walker said as he prepared to meet with coach Mike Shanahan for his exit interview.

Walker was lost for two months this season after he had a third operation on his right knee, and Denver posted its first losing season since 1999.

Titans

Quarterback Vince Young will be day to day this week after his right quadriceps muscle was re-injured. His status for an AFC wild-card game Sunday against San Diego could be in question.

"I can't really say right now if Vince is going to play this week," coach Jeff Fisher said. "I have a good feeling he'll be back on the practice field, and we'll see how he goes."

Giants

State and private officials conducted a preliminary inspection of an escalator that malfunctioned at Giants Stadium Saturday, injuring seven people after the Giants-Patriots game. The inspection is scheduled to resume later this week.

Elsewhere

The white brick home in Surry, Va., that housed former NFL star Michael Vick's dogfighting operation has been listed for sale for $1.1 million.
