Students at several local universities marched yesterday from the streets of Oakland to the District Attorney's office Downtown in support of the Jena Six.
The "walkout," as it was called, was inspired by rapper/activist Mos Def, who had urged Oct. 1 be turned into a day of protest about the jailing of black students in Jena, La., after a racially charged incident there nearly a year ago in which white students allegedly hung nooses in a schoolyard tree.
That, in turn, led to a physical altercation between a white student and those now referred to as the Jena Six.

Four decades ago, a group of young women from Pittsburgh made sports history when they became professional football's first cheerleaders. The Steelerettes made their debut in 1961, and for nearly a decade brought color and spirit to games played by mostly losing Steelers teams.
They cheered from the sidelines at Pitt Stadium because the Steelers had no other home. But the cheerleaders were all students at what was then Robert Morris Junior College (now Robert Morris University.)
They wore knee-length skirts and, in their first season, hardhats.

"Lots of characters," mused Dick Hoak, who was a rookie running back in 1961 and a witness to history before he collected five Super Bowl rings as the longest-tenured assistant coach in franchise history.
It started with uncomplicated times that conjured images of Camelot. Bill Mazeroski's home run slew the Yankees. A new president played touch football on the White House lawn. And some swashbuckling Steelers introduced Baby Boomers to life in the fast Layne, as in quarterback Bobby Layne, along with coach Raymond (Buddy) Parker's rogues' gallery of Tom (The Bomb) Tracy, Buddy Dial, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, John Henry Johnson, Ed Brown, et al.
