The Next Page: 2007 in Cartoons
Sunday, December 30, 2007

As I looked back over all of my cartoons from 2007, a theme began to emerge: Boys. My drawings revealed arrested development in many forms. There were naive mayors, juvenile presidents and infantile congressman, to name a few. I speak from experience. On an emotional level, most editorial cartoonists are still 12-year old boys sitting in the back of the class, drawing funny pictures of their teachers.

Along with some liner notes, I give you the boys of 2007 (just click the cartoon thumbnails to see the larger version):

A. I felt like a boy on
 Christmas morning when
 Luke showed up. The last
time I had this much fun
 drawing a mayor, Sophie
 was only in her 80s.

B. Boys love their toys!
Unfortunately, some of
those toys shoot real bullets.

C. I prefer less lethal
hardware, even if it costs
more than a small arsenal.

D. While one boy played
war the other boy cried like a
baby.

E. I'll bet George W. Bush
 still believes in the
 Easter Bunny.

F. He reminds me of a boy
 playing with matches.

G. Or a boy who flunked
 history class.

H. Like Britney, boys should
never be responsible for
small children.

I. A boy and his dog --
how sweet!

J. It's all fun and games until
someone loses a limb
-- or a life.

K. Graphically speaking,
Boy President seemed to
get smaller and smaller as
the years went by, only his
ears reaching puberty.
We'll have to wait and see if
Boy Mayor matures in office.

Here are the best of the rest from 2007. Some of them stick with the boy theme and some do not. Either way, there seemed to be no shortage of targets for this cartoon boy to tackle!
