With two of his former teammates -- DeJuan Blair (Pitt) and D.J. Kennedy (St. John's) -- making major contributions as freshmen in the Big East Conference, Schenley senior Deandre Kane has to be getting anxious to begin his college career.
In the mean time, the 6-foot-4 guard is putting quite the finishing touches on his final high school season.
Last night in the Greensburg Salem tournament, Kane knocked down seven 3-pointers and scored 32 points to lead Schenley (9-1), the Post-Gazette's No. 1-ranked City League team, to a 87-66 win against Class AAA No. 4 Greensburg Salem (7-3).
Kane is averaging 31 points this season and has scored at least 31 in all but two games.
Greg Blair added 26 for the Spartans, while Jake Matthews paced the host Golden Lions with 19.
Jeannette got off to a rough start at the Bojangles Shootout in Charlotte, N.C., as the Jayhawks were routed by Georgia power South Atlanta, 96-57. Derrick Favors, a 6-foot-9 forward ranked by several scouting services as one of the nation's top juniors, led the Hornets (13-0) with 42 points. Favors' long list of scholarship offers already includes Florida, Kentucky and Memphis. Terrelle Pryor paced Jeannette (2-2) with 25.
Class AA No. 4 Greensburg Central Catholic (8-2) was ousted, 65-52, by Connellsville (6-4), in the Greensburg Salem tournament. Mason Leos scored 21 points for Connellsville.
Brett Matson scored all 15 of his points in the second half, helping Pine-Richland (8-3) to a come-from-behind, 49-40 win against Peters Township (9-3) in the Montour tournament.
Class AA No. 1 Beaver Falls (8-2) overcame a 38-point night from Kennedy Catholic junior Kyle Randall and defeated the Golden Eagles, 83-71, in the Blackhawk tournament. Kenny Cottman scored 27 for Beaver Falls.
It took overtime, but Riverside (11-0) remained undefeated with a 54-53 victory against Allderdice (4-6) in the Shady Side Academy tournament. Jake Wickline led the Panthers with 20 points and was 5 for 5 from the free-throw line in overtime.
