City teachers, schools continue contract talks
Thursday, December 27, 2007

The Pittsburgh Public Schools and Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers bargained for about two hours yesterday and will meet again tomorrow.

Union President John Tarka declined to give details about yesterday's session.

Lisa Fischetti, school district chief of staff, said she wouldn't characterize the session as productive but was pleased that the parties continue to bargain. She said the district provided state mediators with proposed bargaining dates for January but that sessions beyond Friday weren't immediately scheduled.

The PFT represents more than 3,400 teachers, other professionals, classroom aides and technical-clerical workers who have been without contracts since June 30.

The three bargaining units have authorized a strike if the union leadership considers one necessary.
