The Shady Side Academy wrestling team, and its two PIAA Class AA individual champions, will compete in the Powerade Christmas Tournament that gets underway tomorrow morning at Canon-McMillan High School.
"Powerade is one of the top five tournaments in the country," Shady Side Academy coach Tim Giel said.
"Facing competition of this caliber can only help us."
Shady Side Academy's lineup features PIAA champions. Frank Martellotti (103 pounds) and Dane Johnson (112).
"We have 42 teams again this year," Powerade tournament director Frank Vulcano, Jr. said. "Central Dauphin has to be considered a heavy favorite to win the team title."
Central Dauphin, second in the Beast of the East tournament, is from the Harrisburg area and placed fourth at Powerade last year. The Rams have two returning tournament champions in Marshall Peppelman and his brother Walt. They claimed titles at 130 and 140 pounds.
The Peppelman brothers are two of six returning Powerade champions. The others are: Penn-Trafford's Shane Young, Hempfield's Nico Cortese, Sam Rakes of Christiansburg, Va. and Adam Thomas of Parkersburg, W.Va.
Other teams in the tournament from the WPIAL are: Albert Gallatin, Belle Vernon, Burgettstown, Burrell, Canon-McMillan, Chartiers-Houston, Chartiers Valley, Connellsville, Derry, Franklin Regional, Greensburg Salem, Hempfield, Latrobe, McGuffey, Mount Pleasant, Penn-Trafford, South Side Beaver, Trinity, Waynesburg, West Allegheny and West Greene.
Other tournaments
North Allegheny is entered in the 38th annual Manheim Central Christmas Tournament, which begins tomorrow and concludes Friday.
Also entered in the 14-team field are: Bald Eagle Area, Central Mountain, Cumberland Valley, Easton, Erie Cathedral Prep, J.W. Robinson, Kiski Area, Lower Dauphin, Manheim Central, Neshaminy, Reynolds, Shikellamy and Upper Perkiomen.
The 2006 Manheim tournament featured one of its closest battles for the team title with only 25 1/2 points separating the top six finishers. Easton claimed its eighth consecutive title with a five-point victory against Bald Eagle and Kiski Area finished sixth.
Kiski Area senior Tony Clark is one of eight returning champions. Clark won at 135 and is now competing at 145.
Hampton, Perry, Pine-Richland, Seneca Valley, and Shaler are entered in the 36th annual Steve DeAugustino Holiday Classic at West Mifflin High School. The tournament begins tomorrow morning and concludes Saturday night.
Also entered in the 22-team field are Ambridge, Bermudian Springs, Bethel Park, Brashear, Carlisle, Carlynton, Keystone Oaks, Langley, Laurel Highlands, McKeesport, Mt. Lebanon, Penn Hills, South Allegheny, Steel Valley, Thomas Jefferson, Washington and West Mifflin.
Avonworth and Fox Chapel are entered in the 22-team Southmoreland tournament that began today and concludes tomorrow night. The other entries are Baldwin, Bentworth, Blackhawk, Blairsville, Cambria Heights, Central Cambria, Charleroi, Forest Hills, Gateway, Greenville, Meyersdale, Norwin, Ligonier Valley, Northern Bedford, Riverview, Southern Garrett, Southmoreland, Uniontown, Valley and West Branch.
North Hills and Mars are entered in the Wheeling Park Duals, which began this morning and end tomorrow night. Other WPIAL teams entered in the 32-team field are Central Catholic, Hopewell, Montour, Peters Township, Plum and Ringgold.
"We will wrestle eight, possibly nine matches, in two days," North Hills coach Jose Martinez said. "We will face seven teams in pool play, then have one or two matches in the playoff round. It's a great way to get the kids a lot mat time in only two days."
Butler and Moon are entered in Brockway's Big Dog Tournament, which starts tomorrow morning and end Saturday night. The tournament field will include 14 teams and run via a pool format.
