For the second consecutive year, Quaker Valley High School graduate Tim McCutcheon, a senior offensive lineman at California University of Pennsylvania, was selected as one of eight national finalists for the Gene Upshaw Award, presented annually to the top offensive or defensive lineman in NCAA Division II.
Sponsored by the Manheim (Pa.) Touchdown Club, the Upshaw Award was created in 2004. Previous winners include Pittsburg (Kan.) State offensive lineman Nathan Baker (2004) and Grand Valley State defensive lineman Mike McFadden (2005 and 2006).
The Upshaw Award winner is selected by the sports information directors of the 150 football-playing NCAA Division II institutions and is named in honor of the current executive director of the National Football League Players Association, Gene Upshaw.
McCutcheon is a four-time first-team All-PSAC West selection, the first in California University history, and the only player in PSAC history to earn first-team all-conference recognition at three positions (tackle in 2004 and 2007; guard in 2005; center in 2006).
He moved back to tackle this season because of a preseason injury to one of his teammates.
He was a 2006 American Football Coaches Association first-team All-American and a second-team Associated Press and D2Football.com All-American.
He is also a two-time Street & Smith magazine first-team preseason All-American.
Hough all-conference
Pine-Richland High School graduate Greg Hough was honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference for the third consecutive football season.
A senior tailback at Duquesne, he was voted second-team All-MAAC. Hough, who was a member of Pine-Richland's 2003 PIAA runner-up football squad, rushed for 801 yards and scored five touchdowns on 191 carries and caught 18 passes for 210 yards.
This was Duquesne's final season as a football-playing member of the MAAC.
