New Castle, the Post-Gazette's No. 1 team in Class AAAA girls' basketball, got a strong all-around performance from Logan Hartman in its 51-33 Section 3 win against Pine-Richland.
Hartman scored a game-high 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as New Castle (6-0, 4-0) broke open a close game by outscoring Pine-Richland (5-2, 2-1), 16-4, in the final quarter.
Tasia Wise added 11 points and Shelby Rodgers and Nikki Wise each pitched in with 10 for New Castle.
Caroline Steger paced Pine-Richland with nine points.
No. 4 Upper St. Clair (7-1, 2-1) built a 52-36 lead after three quarters en route to its 59-47 Section 4 win against Peters Township (7-2, 2-2). Andrea Pion led three Panthers in double figures with 14 points. Meghan McLean added 12 points and Alex Gensler pitched in with 11 for Upper St. Clair.
Mt. Lebanon (9-0) had an easy time with No. 2 Woodland Hills (5-2) in a non-league game, 63-47. The No. 3 Blue Devils led, 48-24, entering the fourth quarter and were paced by Jackie Babe's 14 points. Woodland Hills connected on only 3 of its 20 3-point attempts in the game and was outrebounded, 48-34.
Lindsey Loutsenhizer had a game-high 26 points as Norwin (7-0, 4-0) upended Latrobe (2-4, 1-2) in Section 1 play, 72-41. The Knights pulled away in the second half, outscoring Latrobe, 31-13.
Freshman Belma Nurkic netted a season-high 30 points to lead Baldwin (6-2, 2-2) to a 59-46 Section 4 win against Canon-McMillan (2-5, 1-2). Nurkic scored 14 of her points in the fourth quarter.
No. 1 Elizabeth Forward (7-0, 1-0) opened Section 5 play with a 70-21 rout of Yough (4-5, 0-1). Cassy Sanderson had 24 points for the Warriors, who took a 39-9 halftime lead. Kristen Hawkins pitched in with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Warriors have outscored their past five opponents by an average of 34 points per game.
Blackhawk (5-1, 2-0) led by 12 entering the fourth quarter and held on for a 51-48 Section 2 win against Ambridge (4-3, 3-1). Krista Franitti had 23 points to lead the Cougars.
South Fayette (5-2, 2-1) upset Brentwood (7-2, 3-1) in Section 3 play, 42-35. Colleen Graeser and Alana George combined for 29 points for the Lions.
Destiny Ambrose had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead Bishop Canevin (5-2, 2-1) to a 67-63 overtime win against South Park (5-3, 3-1) in Section 3. Megan Reffert added 16 points. Nicole Doria led South Park with 19.
No. 1 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (7-1, 4-0) coasted to a 50-18 win against Freedom (7-2, 1-2) in Section 6. Micki Cerchiaro led OLSH with 17 points.
Quigley (5-4, 3-0) slipped past Rochester (5-2, 3-1) in Section 1, 53-46. Kayla Taormina led Quigley with 12 points.
Tiffanni Downey of Derry (6-1, 1-0) scored a school-record 37 points in its 70-42 Class AAA Section 3 win against Southmoreland (6-2, 0-1).
Kylee Patton of Neshannock made 16 of 18 free throws and scored 26 points in the Lancers' (5-2, 4-0) 39-26 Class AA Section 2 win against Mohawk (1-6, 1-2).
Kaila Benson of Valley (1-6, 1-3) went over 1,000 points in her career in the Vikings' 52-41 loss to Kittanning (5-4, 2-2).
