West Virginia is out of the Terrelle Pryor sweepstakes and Michigan is in.
That's some of the recruiting fallout from Rich Rodriguez's decision to leave West Virginia University to become the new coach at Michigan.
West Virginia was one of the five finalists on the list for Pryor, highly touted quarterback at Jeannette High School. His others were Ohio State, Florida, Penn State and Tennessee, although he said yesterday that he has crossed Tennessee off his list and might consider Oregon.
But upon learning of Rodriguez's move, Pryor said, "Michigan is back on my list."
When asked where West Virginia now stands, he said, "West Virginia is off."
Pryor said Rodriguez and his spread option offense were the main reasons he was considering West Virginia. He also said he liked West Virginia assistant Tony Gibson, who was recruiting Pryor. Gibson is expected to go with Rodriguez to Michigan.
"I just liked the way they ran their offense," Pryor said. "I'm sure whatever new coach comes in [to West Virginia] is going to go with an offense they know."
Pryor said he was "surprised" by Rodriguez's decision. Rodriguez called Pryor yesterday and told him he was leaving.
"I just didn't think he'd leave Pat White and Steve Slaton," Pryor said.
Pryor said he most likely will make an official visit to Michigan. Although he is now considering the Wolverines, he also said he looks at Rodriguez a little differently.
"One of the bad things is that he's leaving a place once, so he could leave again," Pryor said.
West Virginia has one recruit from Western Pennsylvania -- Brashear defensive back Jermaine Robinson. He was not available for comment.
Rodriguez's hiring at Michigan also could affect a few other players from the WPIAL.
Montour's Christian Wilson made a verbal commitment to Michigan in August and was recruited to play H-back, a hybrid position between fullback and tight end. After Lloyd Carr resigned as Michigan's coach after the season, Wilson said he would wait until a new coach was hired to decide on his future.
Last night, Wilson's mother said her son "was a little down" about Michigan's new coach.
It's not that he dislikes Rodriguez, but he doesn't believe he will fit into Rodriguez's offensive style.
Gateway linebacker Shayne Hale also was considering West Virginia, but said the Mountaineers are no longer on his list. He visited West Virginia the weekend of the loss to Pitt.
"I was still considering West Virginia, so this is a big shocker," Hale said. "Personally, I didn't expect him to be leaving. He was telling everyone that he was going to be there for a while and that he wasn't going anywhere. This makes him look like he lied."
Pitt has come on strong in Hale's eyes the past few weeks and he made an official visit to Pitt this past weekend.
"It went real well," Hale said.
Hale also visited Ohio State last weekend and said he will choose between Pitt and Ohio State.
Hale will play in the Army All-American Bowl Jan. 5 in San Antonio and will announce his decision there.
