The past week: Smith scored 23 and 25 points as the Woodland Hills girls' basketball team (4-1) had big victories against Oakland Catholic and McKeesport.
Check this out: Smith, a 5-foot-7 senior guard, played her freshman and sophomore years at Gateway before transferring to Woodland Hills. She attended Woodland Hills for a semester last year, but has been home schooled ever since, taking cyber classes. She is averaging 25 points a game this season and went over 1,000 career points. She comes from a family of seven children. Her brother, Aaron, is a receiver at Pitt and her father, Harvey, is a Gateway football assistant coach and former West Virginia University receiver.
Woodland Hills has had some big wins already. How good is this team? I believe we have more potential and more talent than anyone in the WPIAL. We just have to keep working on the basics, like shooting, layups, grabbing rebounds.
How big are sports in your family? It's like life in my family. Everyone in my family loves sports. It's all we talk about at morning and night.
What is the best thing about being home schooled? Probably getting to eat whenever I want to.
What is the worst thing about it? I think I'm a popular person, but my social life has gone down the drain. But you have to sometimes make sacrifices in life. I made this choice myself.

Last week: Loving rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns for the Serra football team in a 48-21 victory against Kane in the PIAA Class A semifinals.
Check this out: Loving, a 5-foot-7, 150-pound senior, is one of three 1,000-yard rushers for Serra. He has 1,339 on 118 attempts (11.3 average), has scored 33 touchdowns and is the team's leading receiver with 22 catches. Loving, an East McKeesport resident, transferred to Serra this year after three years at East Allegheny.
Your offense averages 45 points a game. What makes it so good? I think it's just that everyone can make plays. Our line really blocks, but the backs, the receivers and the quarterback can all make plays.
Why did you transfer to Serra for your senior year? Just for the academics. My grades were starting to go down at East Allegheny and my mom thought it would be the best thing to go to Serra.
Serra has a dress code (polo shirt and khakis). What do you think of a dress code at school? I didn't like it at first, but then I got used to it. I don't really care now.
A food you can't do without? Probably McDonald's cheeseburgers.
People might be surprised to know that you ... Like oldies music.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I really don't know. Hopefully in a house, with a family.
