PG South: PAC honors football standouts

Thomas Jefferson graduate Tom McCafferty, Elizabeth Forward graduate Aaron Davis and Upper St. Clair graduate Kevin Mathews were voted to first-team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference football team.

McCafferty, a senior wide receiver at Washington & Jefferson, caught 63 passes for 1,050 yards and 14 touchdowns. McCafferty concluded his career with 124 receptions, 2,049 yards, and 26 touchdowns.

Davis, a senior h-back/tight end at Waynesburg, received first-team laurels for the second straight season. Davis served as the lead blocker for Yellow Jackets teammate Robert Heller during his school record 2,000-yard season. Davis finished the regular season as the team's second leading rusher with 193 yards and six touchdowns on 45 attempts (4.3 yards per carry).

Mathews, a junior tailback/return specialist at Washington & Jefferson, accumulated 1,704 all purpose yards. He rushed for 991 yards on 139 carries, caught 32 passes for 424 yards and totaled 289 yards on returns.

Seven other area players received honorable mention: Westminster quarterback Kevin Franz (Thomas Jefferson), Grove City quarterback Andrew DiDonato (South Fayette), Westminster linebacker Scott Brucker (Bethel Park), Grove City cornerback Randy Santina (Elizabeth Forward), Westminster defensive lineman Matt Jaworski (Bethel Park), Grove City split end Jay Yanak (Upper Saint Clair), and Washington & Jefferson offensive lineman Kirk Fulton (South Park).

ESPN honorees

South Park High School graduate Chris Ellwanger and Baldwin graduate Kait Etzel-Hardman were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Soccer Teams, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Ellwanger, a junior defender on Westminster College's men's team, was named to the second team. He was a first-team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference selection last year.

Etzel-Hardman, a senior midfielder at Westminster, was also named to the second team. A four-year starter, she had three goals and six assists.
