The Pirates today signed utility infielder Chris Gomez to a one-year, $1 million contract, essentially completing their infield for 2008.
Gomez, 36, is a 15-year veteran of Major League Baseball who split last season between the Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles, batting .297 with a home run and 21 RBIs in 222 at-bats. He walked only 10 times, keeping his on-base percentage a comparatively low .325.
He played all four infield positions last season, including 10 appearances at shortstop, and made three errors in 340 chances.
"We are very pleased to be able to add Chris Gomez to our roster," general manager Neal Huntington said. "His ability and versatility will make him a very valuable addition to our club. We are happy to add his positive veteran presence to the Pirates' clubhouse."
The Pirates' infield starters, barring highly unexpected changes, will remain first baseman Adam LaRoche, second baseman Freddy Sanchez, third baseman Jose Bautista and shortstop Jack Wilson. The other infield bench man will be Josh Wilson, the primary backup at shortstop.
The Pirates and Gomez began negotiating three weeks ago and were close to a contract agreement early last week at Major League Baseball's Winter Meetings, but several details needed to be completed.
Early in the offseason, the New York Yankees inquired about Gomez to fill a similar role.
The 40-man roster again is full.
