The Grove City men's basketball team has been playing its version of "beat the clock" to fashion a six-game win streak and 6-1 record.
Twice in the past 10 days, the Wolverines pulled out victories at the buzzer.
What seemed like a certain loss turned into a 75-74 victory at Geneva, which was playing its first game as a provisional member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Although Geneva's games won't count in the league standings because the Golden Tornadoes are making the transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division III, this will be a game for the ages.
Geneva appeared to have the game wrapped up on Bryan Hill's 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds left on the clock. After a brief celebration, the fans were cleared from the court and the officials put 0.5 seconds back on the clock because in college basketball the clock is supposed to stop automatically after a field goal in the final minute of a game.
Geneva's Rob Whitt was running the baseline to guard against the in-bound pass when he collided with Grove City's Ryan Gibson, who was setting a screen. A foul was called on Whitt, and Gibson made both free throws to give Grove City a bizarre win.
A couple days later, Grove City's Shawn Carr made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Wolverines to a 58-55 victory against Washington & Jefferson. The shot made Carr the school's all-time 3-point leader with 160.
Grove City has won its past four games by a total of nine points: two by one point, one by three points and one by four points in overtime.
Elsewhere in the PAC, Saint Vincent, a provisional member like Geneva, is 6-1, led by 6-3 senior Ian McCullough (18.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg), who sat out last season with a medical redshirt, and 6-2 junior Joey Butler (15.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.8 apg, 4.0 steals), a transfer from Division I Virginia Military Academy. Butler started as a freshman and the first two games as a sophomore before he was dismissed from the team for violation of team rules.
This has been a wonderful start of the basketball season at IUP, where the women are 9-0 and ranked sixth in the ESPN/USA Today Division II poll and the men have won five in a row and are 6-1 to equal last season's win total.
Former Pitt assistant Joe Lombardi has the men's program back on track in his second season after going 6-21 in his inaugural year. The turnaround has been triggered by the infusion of two new players, 6-6 redshirt freshman Darryl Webb (19.9 ppg, 10.1 rpg) and 6-2 Sean Christiansen (16.7 ppg), a transfer from Virginia Military Institute who sat out last season.
Former Schenley standout Gerald Brooks (8.2 ppg), a 6-5 sophomore who was Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West rookie of the year in 2006-07, is rounding into form from a series of injuries that have limited his playing time.
The women are led by 6-1 junior Jahzinga Tracey (18.9 ppg, 9.2 rpg), who set a school record with 612 points last season when she was PSAC West player of the year.
Waynesburg defensive end Mike Czerwien, a 5-8, 225-pound senior from North Hills High School, had four tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss for the United States team that defeated Mexico, 37-19, in the American Football Coaches Association Aztec Bowl in Chihuahua, Mexico. The U.S. team was made up of players from NCAA Division III schools.
Czerwien, the MVP of the Presidents' Athletic Conference, set a record for all NCAA divisions with 52.5 career tackles for a loss.
California, which reached the national semifinals, will send center Tim McCutcheon and wideouts Jermaine Moye and Nate Forse to play for the East squad in the Cactus Bowl, an all-star game for Division II seniors Jan. 11 at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas.
Three other players from the PSAC West will participate in the game: Slippery Rock offensive lineman Mike Butterworth, Edinboro tight end Kyle Witucki and IUP offensive lineman Rory Thomas.
