Gissendanner grabs 17 rebounds for PSU

Penn State (7-3) used balanced scoring and outstanding defense to defeat visiting Georgetown (5-2) going away, 56-47.

Four Lady Lions scored in double figures while the defense held the Hoyas under 50 points. It marked the first time that Penn State has held a team under 50 since March 7, 2007 against Illinois.

Brianne O'Rourke finished with a game-high 12 points and Kam Gissendanner and Rashida Mark had double-doubles.

Gissendanner notched her third career double-double with 10 points and a career-best 17 rebounds while Mark registered her second of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Gissendanner's 17 rebounds is the sixth highest single-game effort in Penn State women's basketball history.

• Freshman forward Kayla Smith scored a game-high 29 points, hitting 13 of 18 shots to lead host California (6-2) past Pitt-Johnstown (2-3), 96-48.

Top 25 women

• Bianca Smith scored 22 points and visiting Colorado (6-2) held off No. 20 Vanderbilt (8-3) for a 62-51 win. The Buffaloes led, 52-32, with 7:07 to play before the Commodores went on a 17-0 run to cut the lead to 52-49 with 3:01 remaining. But Colorado made 10 consecutive free throws in the final 1:47 to secure the victory. ... Kristi Tolliver scored 15 points and added 11 assists, and No. 3 Maryland (13-1) led from start to finish in a 64-46 win against visiting Temple (4-6). Crystal Langhorne added 14 points for Maryland, 10 during a first half when the Terps jumped to an early 19-4 lead. Maryland, winner of three in a row since losing to No. 4 Rutgers Dec. 3, had its lowest first-half output of the season, scoring just 28 points, but benefited from the Owls' poor shooting and never trailed. ... Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 17 points to lead five players in double figures, and No. 5 North Carolina whipped visiting Wofford (3-4), 102-42. The Tar Heels (10-1) defeated the Terriers for the fifth consecutive season, and they took care of it early, running off 32 unanswered points in a 36-2 run that covered nearly 11 minutes in the first half. ... Aubrey Vandiver and Justyna Podziemska each scored 14 points to lead No. 21 Wyoming (8-1) to a 54-50 win against Iowa (6-4) in the championship game of the Hawkeye Challenge. Wyoming didn't allow a point off the fastbreak, and the 18 points allowed in the first half tied Iowa's lowest-scoring first half at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. ... Kirsten Thompson scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds and added three assists off the bench in No. 18 Arizona State's (5-3) 77-56 win against visiting UC Davis (5-2). Haylee Donaghe scored 13 points and had four assists for UC Davis, which has lost three in a row after winning its first five games of the season. ... Angel Robinson scored 17 points to lead host No. 7 Georgia (9-0) to a 79-65 victory against Davidson (5-3).

Top 25 men

• Scottie Reynolds scored 27 points and the 25th-ranked Villanova Wildcats (7-1) made it a record 13 consecutive victories against the Big 5, their five famed city series rivals, with a 101-93 win against host Temple (4-5). ... Freshmen Austin Freeman and Chris Wright helped put the game away in the first half as No. 5 Georgetown (7-0) ran away to an 87-55 victory against visiting Jacksonville (3-6).

Note

David N. Arseneault shattered the NCAA assists record when he had 34 in Grinnell College's 151-112 win against North Central University of Minnesota in a Division III game. The previous record of 26 was set in 1989 by Robert James of Division III Kean University.
