High School Football Notebook: WPIAL teams put perfection on line
Monday, December 10, 2007

The PIAA football championships will include four WPIAL teams, which isn't all that unusual. Since the PIAA playoffs started in 1988, this is the seventh time the WPIAL has had four teams in the finals.

But the records of the four WPIAL teams makes this a one-of-a-kind season.

The four WPIAL teams in the finals this weekend in Hershey, Pa. -- Central Catholic, Thomas Jefferson, Jeannette and Serra -- have 15-0 records. This is the first time the WPIAL has sent four teams to the finals with perfect records.

The WPIAL could make more history this weekend because the league has never won four PIAA titles. The WPIAL had three champions twice -- in 2005 (McKeesport, Franklin Regional and South Park), and 2001 (West Allegheny, Washington and Rochester).

Just fakin'

Steelton-Highspire defeated Bloomsburg, 28-14, in a Class A semifinal Saturday, and a key to the win was two fake punts.

In the first half, Jordan Smith went back to punt, but tucked the ball under his arm and ran 81 yards for a touchdown. In the second half, Smith lined up to punt, but threw a 30-yard pass that set up a touchdown.

Him again

Parkland will play Central Catholic in the Class AAAA final and Parkland is coached by Jim Morgans, who already has two PIAA titles to his credit. Morgans coached Allentown Central Catholic to Class AAA championships in 1993 and 1998.

From Central to Pitt?

Don't be surprised if three Central Catholic players make verbal commitments to Pitt in the next few weeks. Quarterback Tino Sunseri, fullback-defensive end Dan Vaughan and running back-defensive back Andrew Taglianetti have scholarship offers from Pitt and all are seriously considering the Panthers.

"After [Gateway's] Cam Saddler committed this week [to Pitt], everyone kind of said, 'Maybe we should just go join him,'" Taglianetti said. "It's definitely a consideration. We'll see what happens, but we definitely do all like Pitt."

Pitt also has offered Central Catholic tight end-defensive end Quentin Williams, but he doesn't seem as interested in Pitt as the others.

Sunseri said yesterday he might make a decision in the next few days. He had committed to Louisville in the spring, but eventually opened up his recruiting and looked elsewhere. He still is considering Louisville.

Just Jagin'

The Class AAA championship will definitely be a catfight. Both Thomas Jefferson and Garnet Valley are nicknamed Jaguars.
